I am curious to know if anybody has the reason for the longer bullet cartridge in the back of John Waynes Holster. Thanks SKIP

To indicate when his ammunition is half used up, it was also in case he was in battle and had a rifle and needed some rifle shells.

I agree with the first answer, but a lot of guys would put more than one rifle bullet in thier belt. A lot of times too, most guys would buy a rifle that was the same calibre as their pistol, that way, they could just interchange ammo between two guns. The longer, bottle neck cartriges didn't become common until around the turn of the century. the longer bullets in a lot of cowboy movies would be a .45-70 bullet from a Sharps rifle or a Remington or Winchester rolling block (all single shots) that the US Cavalry used at the time. The lever guns of that era didn't use the long cartriges the single shots did. :cowboy:

Hi everyone,

Im new to this board but im a huge John Wayne fan, so I thought I'd jump in on this question. the single long bullet John wayne carried in the back center of his gunbelt was actualy .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor cartridge, it was carried in tribute to the soldiers of the Indian wars :)
