I can't remember the name of the character actor , usually played the part of maybe being a bit touched. Was in Red River, The Searchers, Big Jake, also believe he was in the Ford Trilogy. One heck of a horseman too! In The Searchers he was captured by the Comnches and made like he was crazy which he was just a bit. And loved that rocking chair. Would like to find out as much as possible about him. Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Dunson,

I believe your referring to "Ol Mose" which was played by Hank Worden.

Also, he was in the Alamo.

Right Mose Harper, how many movie was he in with the Duke? I know in McLintock he swallowed the egg after being slapped on the back.

Here's the list I find at IMdB, of joint ventures between Hank Worden and John Wayne -

1939 - The Night Riders
1947 - Angel and the Badman
1948 - 3 Godfathers
1948 - Fort Apache
1948 - Red River
1949 - The Fighting Kentuckian
1956 - The Searchers
1959 - The Horse Soldiers
1960 - The Alamo
1963 - McLintock
1969 - True Grit
1970 - Chisum
1970 - Rio Lobo
1971 - Big Jake
1973 - Cahill, US Marshall

The number of films, 15, is the same as Kevin's list, but includes The Night Riders and not Stagecoach.

I know there are folks around here who can clarify the list.

Was Hank Worden in Stagecoach and or Nightriders?

According to imdb he's in both, but in uncredited extra roles only - it may be hard to spot him.

Hank Worden (http://www.hankworden.com) last film was in Paul Hogan's "Almost An Angel." If you see a western called "The Hanged Man" Mr. Worden has a great part. He was a gentle soul.

Mr. Worden was in Stagecoach. His first film with John Wayne & John Ford. He was one of the cavalrymen in the charge chasing off the indians who attacked the Stagecaoch. This is a fact, because there is a painting of him in his uniform and he has told it in his interviews. He was not in any early John Wayne film.

The thing I liked about him, was it seemed he never changed. In 1956 The Searchers, Wayne asked, "why ain't somebody bury him yet" referencing his age, and yet 1971 Big Jake, 15 years he didn't really look any different. His best role was obviously in The Searchers where he did the finest job I have ever seen in the "comic relief" role. Commanches about to attack, and he takes his hat off solemnly, "For that which we are about to receive, we thank thee O Lord." And Ward Bond: "Mose...how far to the river?" Ans: I've been baptized reverend, I've been baptized."

Good stuff.

How about this one from The Searchers. When they drag him into the house after he's set free by the Comanches and they put him in the rocking chair, Waynes asks him where the Comanches are and he looks at Wayne and says, "won't tell ya", sticks his tongue out at him and smiles at Jeff Hunter and says, "tell Marty, though".
