View Full Version : New Chat Room System Up And Running.
Kevin February 9th, 2004, 09:36 PM Hi all,
There is a new chat room available now. The new chat room works off your login name and you must be a member of the board to use the chat room. So once you've logged in to the message board then you'll be able to login to the chat room. It's that simple (hopefully :P )
- See who's in the chat room by clicking on the "Who's in the Chat room?" link at the top right of the page (under the main logo).
- Access the chat room by clicking the "The John Wayne Chat Room" link on the main page of the site.
Give it a try and let us know if you like it!!
Cheers,
Kevin
smokey February 10th, 2004, 08:31 AM kevin,

CHANCE February 10th, 2004, 02:08 PM Oh Kevin what have you done don't like this prefereed the other one i can see better on the original hard to see on new one please bring back the old one.
chance :(
LittleDuke February 10th, 2004, 02:36 PM Hey guys,
I can't get into the new chat room for some reason. I've been trying for the last half hour. I see someone is chatting but I can't get in to join.
I"ll try later,
Little Duke
Kevin February 10th, 2004, 03:15 PM hum... I seem to have no problems on my end. I tested this thing for several days before I added to the site.
Little Duke, have you had any luck getting in?
Chance, I can change the colors on the chat window, if that would help.
And Smokey, try hitting your refresh button once you have the chat window up.
CHANCE February 10th, 2004, 04:09 PM Hi kevin it's a bit strange it'll take time to get used to the new layout.
Can you choose a colour for your type face like the old one.
Chance :stunned:
chester7777 February 10th, 2004, 05:05 PM smokey, did you try to access the chat room with a bookmark, when you weren't signed into the message board? It is my understanding that now only registered members of this message board, who are logged on (not just browsing as a guest), can get into the chat room.
I have another question for Kevin. I was wondering if we have the option of choosing text colors in the chat. That was a helpful feature, to be able to differentiate "speakers."
Just a reminder to everyone, if you don't officially "Quit" the chat, you show up as still in there; just closing the window doesn't exit you from there, you have to click the little red button to do that.
Chester :newyear:
smokey February 11th, 2004, 07:11 AM hi kevin and chester
did that clicked the refresh button and got in will i have to do that all the time?
chester i was logged on but logged out then relogged on just in case i was doing it wrong but kevin's one worked just fine
thanks to both of you
cheers smokey
arthurarnell February 11th, 2004, 08:14 AM Hi Kevin
Just tried the new chat room my lines came up in red without any prompting from me and as I have only ever been in any chat room less than a handful of times I found it very easy. And with my lack of computer expertise if I can make it work any body can.
Regards
Arthur
ps
The new layout looks very striking.
chester7777 February 11th, 2004, 09:26 AM Arthur,
I think each person sees his or her own posts in red, but I know Kevin will correct me on that if I'm wrong. I liked having each choose a color, because it made it easier to keep track of people if you had more than 2 in the chat. But if that's not an option, that's not a problem. It was a nice touch, but we can live without it.
I'm happy to see that there is a time stamp by each person's entry. That was VERY helpful in the quiz, in allowing appropriate credit when answers were within a few seconds of each other.
Looking forward to chatting with some of you one of these days.
Chester :newyear:
Kevin February 11th, 2004, 03:44 PM Hi all,
Chance with this system there is no option for changing your font color. I also liked that option but this is something that the developer didn't include. I have requested (to the developer) that this option be included in his new update. We'll see if it makes it.
Smokey, You shouldn't have to refresh the window at the beginning. I think your browser was playing tricks on you. But, please let me know if you keep have to. I know I haven't had to refresh it and I use Internet Explorer 6.0
Also, Your text will be red, all others will be black.
I'm always looking for improvement, and I'll keep looking for a better chat room system. The reason I wanted to use this system was because it uses the members login names. I thought it would be more convenient for everyone.
Thanks,
Kevin :cowboy:
Robbie February 12th, 2004, 03:49 PM Hi Smokey and friends
I had the same problem accessing the chatroom today as you had when I hit the chatroom link I was displayed with an error message stating 'Robbie you need to log into the forum'. This message made little sense as I was already logged in and and the chatroom recognised this by displaying my name. I clicked on the chatroom link several times with no success but I then found out how to get around this problem log out and then log back in again, this rectifies the problem and access to the chatroom is gained. This is something you may want to look into Kevin.

Robbie February 12th, 2004, 05:07 PM Hi Kevin
I am currently talking to Chance via the chatroom but I have noticed that the speed of it has slowed down from yesterday and it is now only marginally faster than the old one can this problem be corrected.
:agent:
Kevin February 12th, 2004, 06:29 PM Robbie,
I'll look into the slowness. It maybe slowing down because I have the history set pretty high.
LittleDuke February 12th, 2004, 08:00 PM Hi Kevin,
I finally made it on as you can see. I did what you said. I can't however get into the chat room. It comes up and the heading is there but then it freezes.
I'll keep trying.
Little Duke
LittleDuke February 13th, 2004, 04:11 PM Hi Kevin,
I still can't get into the chat room. I had just looked at who was in there and you and Chance were. I clicked on the link but again, I could only get the heading and then it freezes.
We'll see LittleDuke
Kevin February 13th, 2004, 04:44 PM Hum...That's strange. Do you see anything when the new window opens?
LittleDuke February 13th, 2004, 07:53 PM I can get into the chat box after that it freezes. The heading is there with John Wayne's picture but then it freezes.
LittleDuke
Kevin February 13th, 2004, 08:20 PM It sounds like you could possibly have some issues on your end.
What browser version are you using?
Robbie February 16th, 2004, 07:11 PM Hi Kevin
I'm still being plagued with error messages at random times when I'm attempting to log into the chatroom.
:agent:
LittleDuke February 16th, 2004, 07:55 PM Hi Kevin,
I'm using Internet Explorer 5.0. I had it upgraded a year ago if I remember correctly. I can't get the chat room to open all the way. I'm not a wiz at the computer so really I have no clue as to what I need to do.
Thanks,
LittleDuke
Kevin February 16th, 2004, 08:39 PM LittleDuke,
I think if you upgraded to Internet Explorer 6 that would help, although I'm not 100% sure. These computers tend to do crazy things. Sometimes things work differently for different people.
One way to upgrade your browser is to go under tools>windows update from within your browser
or goto http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
You should probably go to the above url every so often to find and install new security patches for your PC.
LittleDuke February 18th, 2004, 10:00 AM Hi Kevin,
I run Internet Explorer 5.5 and I went to Windows Update and I can't download 6. It starts at Windows 98 and goes up. I did update security. We want to get a new computer. Looks like I won't be able to get into the chat room until we do that. The computer I have was given to us about 4 years ago,and we work off of Windows 95, so I can't complain. Until we buy a new one I'll communicate through personal messages and topics.
Thanks for your help,
LittleDuke
Robbie February 19th, 2004, 04:35 PM Hi Kevin
The chatroom has slowed down considerably its even slower than the old one. I think the problem is that there is too big of a backlog from previous conversations.

InHarmsWay July 5th, 2005, 02:43 AM Hi all,Question.
Whenever I have attempted to access the chatroom in the last week or so, it says access denied and that I must "login" to the forums to get in, although I am already logged on.
Am I banned from the chat room or is it an error?

smokey July 5th, 2005, 09:00 AM hi in harms way

Hondo Duke Lane July 5th, 2005, 10:34 PM IHW,
Have you been able to get into the chat room? Is anyone else having trouble getting into the chat room?
I hope you will try it out. It's a great way to chat with your fellow poster, and get to know him or her better. I got to meet and learn a lot about a lot of you, and enjoy it a lot. Wish I could do this more. But getting to know Robbie, Smokey, Chester (...& the Mrs.), Chance, Kevin, and many others has been a treat.
Hope to get to know you better. Let's chat!
Cheers B)
chester7777 July 6th, 2005, 12:18 AM We second that emotion!
Hondo, Smokey, Chilibill, the Mrs. and I were having a fun time, typing up a storm in the chat room yesterday morning (at least it was morning for us, the middle of the night for Smokey, and almost noon for Hondo). Then Chilibill started talking about that yummy Duke's chili . . . and had us all drooling. He said he was going to turn 30 pounds of elk meat into a big batch of chili for a church potluck next Sunday . . . :D . It's quite a commute, but that chili sure is good  .

IHW,
Ah, but we do! Go to the top of any page on the message board, and on the top right there is a red link entitled Who's in the Chat room?
Check it out! And we hope to see you there one of these days  !

Kevin December 27th, 2005, 09:51 PM Update:
The chat room has been updated and changed!! We are using a new intergrated chat system that allows members to use the the chat room using their existing login. This seems to be a much better system, with many more features.
So try it out and post in this thread any questions or comments.
To access the new chat room please click on the 'DukeChat' at the top right of the page.

The Ringo Kid June 19th, 2007, 08:01 PM Well, just for the heck of it, i decided to try to enter the chatroom. Well, LO AND BEHOLD, I got in. That's the good part.
Okay, once I was in, I read what came on the screen, which was a message of sorts that said something like: "I have entered the saloon." And it gave the time I entered.
I was thinking that I had actually seen a miracle of sorts but my hopes were quickly thrown over the cliffs to smash onto the rocks and broken up to bits, hundreds of feet below.
I clicked on anything and everything that was on the screen and yet nothing happened. I clicked next to anything and everythinjg--thinking maybe this is where you type your message? I tried to type--nothing showed on the screen.
I tried clicking on that small"X" in the upper right of the screen, and it took away everything that was on the screen--the box that said I had entered the saloon etc. It just disappeared and nothing happens. I guess that means that I left the chatroom?
Anyway, can someone PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE explain to me where the hell do I go to on that screen in order to type in something and see it appear?

gt12pak June 19th, 2007, 09:31 PM I must apologize as it was my fault. Since we seem to be having a hard time getting together by phone lately, I thought that we could get together through the chat room.
DakotaSurfer June 20th, 2007, 02:07 AM The chat room is cheaper than the phone...
chester7777 June 20th, 2007, 03:13 AM The chat room is cheaper than the phone...
Tis true, but what I like about the chat room is that you can have a conversation with so many more people than on the phone at one time.
The advantage to a phone conversation is that you don't have to type everything.
Chester :newyear:
DakotaSurfer June 20th, 2007, 03:15 AM There's always a conference call or Internet Webphone.
chester7777 June 20th, 2007, 03:18 AM Yeah, but doesn't a conference call cost??
I don't have a speaker to talk into the computer, so Internet web phone wouldn't work for me right now.
The chat room is especially fun when you are chatting with folks around the world. I've been in there with Arthur in the UK and smokey in Australia and Hondo in Alabama all at the same time. It is truly fun.

Definitely... I haven't paid for a long distance call for at least 5 - 7 years.
gt12pak June 20th, 2007, 08:17 PM Same here, but only for about 2 years. If it wasn't for that, I never would have spoken to Ringo.
DakotaSurfer June 20th, 2007, 08:23 PM It has definitely helped the phone bill budget. My long distance covers the US, Canada, Mexico, UK and Western Europe just in case I ever need to call there.

What years were you in ?

Hi Dakota, nope, just tried it again and still only see the samething about entering chatroom but nothing else. I don't have anything that even shows where I can type in a message and there is no send button anywhere. Im wondering if its just these junky library computers? BOY is it frustrating.......

GT, you were not around when I went in there. I think I was the only logged in member at the time and I thought i'd see if it would work if I tried to get into it again--but--nada. I guess i'll never be able to get into the chat room until i get a computer--as well as never be abe to see what the official John Wayne website looks like. GGrrrrrr.

I wonder if the resolution on the library computer is such that you don't get to see the bottom of the screen and for some reason there is no scroll bar so you could even scroll down. I can't remember . . . did you say the library only has a Netscape browser? Or do they also have Internet Explorer? I also wonder if using a different browser would make a difference. You know, our local K-Mart has several computers with Internet access, that are available during store hours, for free. I have never tried them, but I would guess you would be able to access the chat room from a computer like that. It's right in the front of the store, so I don't think there is any issue of anyone accessing porn or anything like that - too public. So maybe you have to find another place where you can access the internet, because the library sure isn't cutting it :cry2:.

Hi Sue, I think what you said above about the resolution is correct, but only on the computer im using today. The one I normally use, you can see the bottom of the screen. The problem with that computer (for now) is they are having some sort of "line-problem?" But when I used that computer in the past to try to get into chat--it did the same thing this compter im on today-did. I tried it yesterday but--nothing was different.
We used to have a K-Mart here, but they moved all store out of the area and now Wally-World and H.E.B. own the area. I rarely ever thought to go to K-Mart for anything--not that I have anything against them at all. They were just in a bad location and one normally never thought to stop there for anything--so we always went to WM and HEB instead.

The Chat Room is a great, but sadly very underused feature.
From time to time the Admin team set up a 'Chat Room Meet'
which we will post when imminent.
In the meantime, may I suggest that you could message members,
and invite them to join you there
or use this dedicated thread.
