Here's a few of mine:

Big Jake
Rio Bravo

Chisum
The Cowboys
The Alamo- The speach he gives on a Republic nearly makes me cry.
The Shootist- Great creed to live by.

I don't think movies can get any better than these!

It is really hard to choose the movies that are my favorites but here are a few:

1.The Alomo ( Beings it was John Wayne's dream to film it, and it turned out pretty dang good too!)
2. The Quiet Man ( I love to see Duke and Maureen O' Hara together, and this was one of the best they did, in my opinion)
3. Rio Lobo ( Good Movie!)
4. Rio Bravo ( I think the cast played off of each other very well, and it has a lot of humor in it too!)
5. Hatari ( Good Movie! And it is different from all of his others)
6. The Shootist ( Even though it makes me cry everytime I see it)
7. North to Alaska ( When I want to laugh)
8. McLintock (funny)
9. Blood Alley
10. The Wings of Eagles ( I like the way he fits his disability in this movie!)
11 Hellfighters
12. Trouble Along the Way
13. Dark Command
14. Flying Tigers
15. Three Godfathers
16. The Fighting Kentuckian
17. Chisum
18. Big Jake
19. Rooster Cogburn
20. Donovans Reef

I don't think 20 is enough! John Wayne was the greatest!

hi chance,

my pick of the dukes movies are as follows:

quite man, mclintock, the searchers, hellfighters, red river, fort apache, operation pacfic, trouble along the way, pt 104?, hondo, the man who shot liberity valance, the shootist, she wore a yellow ribbion, blood alley, donavans reef, the cowboys, the alamo, hatari, jet fighter, circus world.

you can't just pick 20 as he made some really great movies too many to pick for a top 20 list, he made them all for us to enjoy so what might be my pick may not be to some else's liking his ones about the different services should be the pick of the bunch at the moment as it shows the true spirit of the service personal who will do their best for their country no matter which country it is.

cheers smokey

=5. The Shootist

Better late than never

Here are my picks of 1-20, with some additional thoughts:

1. They Were Expendable (color version) - As an old Navy sailor, I really enjoyed this one

2. The Quiet Man

3. True Grit

4. Sands of Iwo Jima (the Marines were part of the Navy ;) )

5. The Shootist

6. The Searchers (my third son, when he was 3 years old, called this movie "The Lookers")

7. Rio Bravo

8. McLintock

9. Red River

10. Rooster Cogburn

11. The Sons of Katie Elder

12. The Alamo

13. The Green Berets

14. El Dorado

15. Stagecoach

16. North to Alaska and Donovan's Reef are tied for crazy, wacky, havin' fun

17. Chisum

18. Fighting Seabees (another branch of the U.S. Navy :) )

19. Wake of the Red Witch

20. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Hatari are tied for the twentieth position. I'd hate to flip a coin and leave one out.

Most of these are so good, and have certain points that are so good, that it's impossible to really rate them one before the other. I've never had the chance to see Blood Alley, Wings of Eagles, or Trouble Along the Way, so they may well be worthy of being in the top twenty and I just don't know it yet.

One group of older westerns that I've really enjoyed are the colorized versions of the Duke starring with Gabby Hayes. Four of these that I might mention are:

Tall in the Saddle
The Man from Utah
West of the Divide
Saga of Death Valley

There are more, but these are the only colorized ones I've seen. I realize some purists will find this offensive, but I feel that colorizing gives it a more interesting quality.

So there you have my two cents worth!

In order to help everyone work on Hondo's Second Annual List, I thought it would be fun to bring this topic back to the top. CHANCE started it almost a year ago, and we can compare our lists from last year to now. It is interesting to me to read my own comments, as now I have seen the movies I had not seen at that time. I also have new and different perspectives on some of the movies after close to a year has gone by.

So enjoy this little stroll back in time . . . :headbonk: (I haven't used that in a long time :P )!

Well with the start of the 4th year here at the JWMB and with the forums birthday just a few days away, I thought I'd bring this oldie back to the top (again). Feel free to find your post (if you posted earlier) and tell us what your favorite Duke movie is today. As Chester has posted previously, it would be interesting to see in there are any new perspectives in anyones views.

Senta,

I can almost guarantee that it will, as you see more of Duke's movies. The first time I posted a list of my favorites, I had never seen Tall in the Saddle. That movie is high on my list of favorites now. There are probably others that have moved into the favorites list, but for the moment Tall . . . is the one that stands out the most for me.

Hi Chester,
I have never seen Tall in the Saddle. It is funny, I win it two times at e-bay. First time with some other movies, but this one that I wanted most of all I didn't get. Seller send me money back and wrote that he found that his copy wasn't good. So I odered it for the second time and now waiting. The post working pretty slow at these days.

It is very intersting list of top 20 movies, Arthur. Not odinary at all.
