View Full Version : JOHN WAYNE OSCAR YOUR CHOICE
CHANCE March 25th, 2003, 03:03 PM Hi which of the Dukes film's would you have giving him an oscar for
here's a starter.
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON
THE SHOOTIST
RED RIVER......
dukefan1 March 25th, 2003, 03:13 PM The Searchers is tops on my list. How he got overlooked on that one still mystifies me! Dukefan1
stacy March 25th, 2003, 08:17 PM Hi Chance,
I agree all the way, I think the Shootist was one of the best! And I also thought he sould have gotten one for The Wings of Eagles! Of course if it were up to me he would have got a lot more Oscars, for his work! I also think he sould have at least got a mention for directing The Alamo, I thought it was very well done!
Later!
Stacy
Idaho March 25th, 2003, 09:40 PM Greetings:
I don't think that anyone can deny that the Duke's performance in "The Cowboys" was superb, I thought he was very dynamic in it, definately Oscar worthy. But my favorite movie is "Big Jake" who ever thought that two words: "Not Hardly" could carry so much weight. Or the speach to Richard Boone when he looks in the chest and whispers to him, "... No matter what happens I'm gonna blow your head off."
There's my 2 cents,
Idaho
Hondo Duke Lane March 25th, 2003, 11:02 PM My chioce in addition to the ones above would be, "The Quiet Man."
What a performance!
Hondo
Dunson April 1st, 2003, 08:12 PM Red River hands down for me. Then The Searchers.
chester7777 April 2nd, 2003, 01:17 AM Well, I'll take a CHANCE with my list of Oscar nominees:
The Quiet Man
The Searchers
The Shootist
The Sands of Iwo Jima
The Alamo
Red River
Rooster Cogburn
In my opinion, John Wayne should have more Oscars than any actor living or dead.

houdini April 2nd, 2003, 08:28 AM i just ant to say that john eayne is the finest man that ever walked on god's planet
may2 April 11th, 2003, 09:22 AM The Searchers.
Kevin April 11th, 2003, 08:04 PM May2,
I must ditto your selection. The Searchers would be my choice too.
Kevin
McCandles April 13th, 2003, 01:22 PM The searchers for me as well , even more amazed John Ford never won a gold statue for this as well .
1956 must have been a great year for movies !!
kwirtj April 16th, 2003, 11:00 AM The Cowboys definately, then Rooster Cogburn, The Searchers, and The Shootist. These are some of the best work that Wayne did.
Ethan April 17th, 2003, 03:41 AM Definitely should have been awarded an oscar for "Tha Searchers", how he got passed over amazes me! But he should have won for "Red River" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". His portrayal of Capt. Nathan Brittles literally brings that character to life before your very eyes, you forget it's John Wayne your watching. There are others that are at least worthy of oscar nomination like "The Wings of Eagles" and "The Shootist". But I also feel he should have been awarded an oscar for his portrayal of Capt. Rock Tory from "In Harms Way" he wasn't Premingers 1st choice, but he delivers an outstanding performance.
Ethan
smokey April 18th, 2003, 11:18 AM hi,
you are all right he should have won the oscar for the searchers. the story was great and it also allowed for the years to pass crediblely so of all that would be my pick for his oscar
cheers smokey
Robbie April 29th, 2003, 03:30 PM Good question heres my top five
1. THE SEARCHERS
2. Red River
3. The Shootist
4. Sands Of Iwo Jima(I think his performance in this was better than his performance in She wore a yellow Ribbon although his performance in Ribbon was sublime)
5. The Cowboys (A very under appreciated movie and performance and unfortunately it still is)
Big Jake May 2nd, 2003, 07:58 PM THE SEARCHERS
POSSIBLY ALSO THE SEARCHERS
AND THE SEARCHERS
WHY WHY WHY DID HE NOT GET A NOMINATION AT LEAST

Hondo Duke Lane May 3rd, 2003, 03:47 PM Because, Because, Because of the political stance he stood on during that time with the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Long story short, he stood for American values, and the majority of the Hollywood elites didn't, and more or less boycotted John Wayne and many others from the nominations from Oscar.
Hondo
AEC23 May 3rd, 2003, 09:03 PM My choices for oscars would have to be:
1. The Quiet Man
2. The Searchers
3. The Shootist
Big Jake May 4th, 2003, 01:35 PM No Hondo you are quite wrong he didnt get nominated because critics didnt understand the complexity of the movie and for that reason it was ignored. If you read old reviews about the movie you will realise they are very critical. :P
Hondo Duke Lane May 5th, 2003, 04:15 PM They were critical of his movies because they were critical of him. If you read about it in the book, "John Wayne: America," you will see some of the reasons, from John Ford, and other peers. The movie critics were always hard on Duke, no matter what he did. I am not saying, he would have won best actor for those movies against the others that have won, but we'll never know because he was never at that time going to be nominated, no matter.
He was nominated for best actor for "Sands of Iwo Jima," and I think he should have won that, but Broderick Crawford won it for "All The King's Men," and if you knew about how the message that picture was sending out to the public, you would know that HUAC had their hand in it. I recall that many in an article I've read (I can't remember where that was, so I would have to research that again {read this 4 years ago}) thought of the movie very anti-american, and was very unpopular at that time. Seems so, because I haven't seen this movie on TV or on video. To be honest, I haven't looked for it on either. Anyway, I don't always value critics opinion most of the time.
That book will open your eyes on a lot of things that you won't find from the media or critics.
Hondo ;)

I'm going to resurrect this thread, and say I whole-heartedly agree with Ethan on saying John Wayne should have won for his role as Torrey in "In Harm's Way". Great performance, from start to finish!
Robbie January 18th, 2005, 07:40 AM I've heard he's good in the movie 'in harms way' my friend likes this movie, is Dukes character more flawed than usual.

No, Duke as usual plays the good guy. It's Kirk Douglas whose character is flawed.
William T Brooks January 18th, 2005, 08:38 AM I would have voted for the three Films below if I had been ask by S.A.G. for two of the Films I was a member of S.A.G. at that time.
"THE SHOOTIST" This was Duke at his Best even tho he was very Sick with Cancer at the time, and He played the part to the Hilt!
"RED RIVER" Even many of the Major Stars of the time said that He should have received the Award for this Film!!!
"SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON" In this Film Duke played Himself in the part and because I had a little to do with this Film I would have to Vote for Duke in the Film!

Jay J. Foraker January 26th, 2005, 12:02 PM "In Harm's Way" seems to be overlooked a lot when John Wayne films are discussed. But the Admiral "Rock" Torrey role seems to fit Duke to a "T." I never tire of watching this movie (good Jerry Goldsmith score). But my wife, who's father was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked, remarks that no civilians were killed in Hawaii on Dec. 7th. Just another case of movies turning historical events for entertainment value.
Wayne should have received an Oscar for this one!
Cheers - Jay :)

I didn't much care for it. I liked "Operation Pacific" much better.
Robbie January 27th, 2005, 07:02 PM I havent seen the Shepherd of the hills but I have heard that Duke was in the runnings to be nominated for an oscar for this movie but was not chosen to be nominated, is this true.
:agent:
Hondo Duke Lane January 28th, 2005, 12:28 AM That's pretty hard to know that answer, Robbie. It was a long time ago, and when nominations come out, I guess rumours come out about movies, actors, etc. getting a chance to be in the running for the Oscar. As far as I know every actor can be eligible for the Oscar until the nominations are announced. But I could be wrong. He did get a nomination for best leading actor in The Sands of Iwo Jima.
Cheers B)
blacksnake January 28th, 2005, 06:38 AM 1. In Harm's Way
2. The Shootist
3. The cowboys
4. Red River
