John Wayne's Eldest Son Dies at 68
Thu Apr 3, 3:59 PM ET

BURBANK, Calif. - Michael Wayne, the eldest son of late actor John Wayne (news) who helped produce several of his father's films, has died. He was 68.

Wayne died of heart failure Wednesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center following complications from lupus, an immune system disease, publicist Warren Cowan said Thursday.

He was the head of Wayne Enterprises, which owns many of his father's films. Distributing the movies and merchandising his father's image occupied much of Wayne's time, along with real estate and other investments.

He said in 1991 that there were both advantages and drawbacks of having such a famous father, but "the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. I produced 'McClintock!' when I was 25 years old. I don't think if I wasn't John Wayne's son, I would have had that opportunity."

"It wasn't all smooth, working with my father; there were a lot of bumps along the way, both for him and me," he said. "But I wish he were still around so we could get in arguments."

Among the films Michael Wayne helped produce were "Brannigan" (1975), "The Green Berets" (1968), "Big Jake" (1971) and "The Train Robbers" (1973).

He also was chairman of the board of the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's Health Center. John Wayne died of lung cancer in 1979.

Wayne graduated from Loyola University of California in 1956 and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gretchen; his mother, Josephine Alicia Saenz; two brothers; three sisters; five children; and two grandchildren.

A sad day at Batjac. I wonder who will take over for him. Hopefully, whoever it is will be able to resolve whatever problems there were that have been holding up the release of some of the John Wayne movies (it's late right now, the titles escape me . . . I think one is "The High and the Mighty" and I don't remember the others).

If there is a life hereafter, it would be interesting to be a fly on the heavenly wall listening to the Duke chatting with Michael.

My deepest sympathy to the Wayne Family. One question: Were there not four daughters of John Wayne? In Michael's obituary it lists he had three sisters. John Wayne had two sons, Michael and Patrick and two daughters Melinda and Toni with Josephine and two daughters Aissa and Marisa and one son Ethan with Pilar. Has one of the sisters also passed away?? If so when and how?

I must say I was alittle shocked to her that Michael Wayne had passed away. I hadn't heard of him being to in particularly bad health lately. My sympathy's go to the family and the staff a Wayne Enterprises over the lost, he will be missed.

I have the Cowboy and Indians magazines interview with Michael from 1/2002 at http://www.skyecom.net/jwayne/MWayne-inter...w-01-2002.shtml (http://jwayne.com/MWayne-interview-01-2002.shtml)

:( My sympathies to the Wayne family for the passing of Michael.

chester77777,
You are correct on "The High and the Mighty", the other movie Bajac had legal problems was "Island in the Sky".

I was shocked to hear of Michael's passing. I didn't realize he had been ill. I haven't been on here for awhile. I've been thinking of him ever since I read the news. This is very sad and I do send out my prayers to the Wayne family and just hope they have wonderful memories they can remember to help soften the blow. The Duke has two of his children with him now.
So Sorry to hear it.

Regarding the leadership of Wayne Enterprises, I heard today from someone who I believe to be a reliable source, that Michael's sister Melinda will be taking over the reins. Hopefully, she will do as good a job, or even better, than Michael.
