Hi all there has been some talk as of late regarding a trip to a location where John Wayne made a movie with two names mentioned namely the Republic of Ireland and Monument Valley. Is there anything definate yet I heard the year 2007 mentioned that does seem quite a long time away who knows what we will all be doing then. If there is going to be a trip would it be possible to have it a little earlier?

I would love to go to both those places. Very high on my big to do list.

I am interested as well. I think from a pure financial aspect that Monument Valley would be a much better option for me though. And I believe that thought process was to meet in 2007 because of the Duke 100th birthday.

If it was to be a firm plan its always better to get started early though.

Since I am the one who started that rumor, I guess I should clarify this.

The trip mentioned, to be made to Ireland in 2007 to commemorate the Duke's 100th birthday, was introduced originally as an event being coordinated by Duke's Hollywood Cowboys )DHC), a group that is independent of this message board (if you go to that separate forum, I posted an introduction to them there that you can read for more information). I became aware of, and ultimately a member of, the DHC in May of last year, and attended their annual gathering to celebrate John Wayne's birthday. Their idea is to have that gathering in Ireland in 2007, obviously around the area of the filming of The Quiet Man, to honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of the man we honor every day through this message board.

For you newer members, here are links to threads that might fill in some of the gaps in this -

Thread about the Duke's 100th birthday in Ireland (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=223)

Thread reporting about DHC and 96th birthday in Tombstone Arizona (http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=163)
(I'm sorry to report that we never did get those picture up and running - way more time consuming than we ever imagined to do it right, but that's another story)

Anyway, my point in making this is to say that it was not specifically a message board gathering, although anybody from the message board is welcome to join the DHC at any event at which they are assembling, since we all share a love of John Wayne.

However, I think it might be fun to try to pull together something like that for the Duke's 100th birthday, and Monument Valley would be an appropriate place, for those of us here in the States. I'm with you, SXViper, going to Ireland is likely not in my financial cards, although I'm not completely ruling out the possibility. But I would truly enjoy having the opportunity to get together with a bunch of you and meeting face to face, and not being limited by the keyboard in communicating. Having never planned an event for a large group of people, I have no idea what is involved or how one goes about reserving a block of rooms for a group discount at a motel, etc.

So I guess that's it for now. I started this post last night, forgot to sign off before going to bed, my kid left the computer on, and I came out to check on things before heading off to work, and found my partially completed post. :headbonk:

Hi Chancey and others

I am very interested in the proposed Duke trip. I would be in favour however if it was nearer rathers than further into the future possibly this summer. Finding a suitable location is going to be difficult that will accommodate most but what I suggest is that anybody interested in a duke messageboard trip in the near future to state it in this topic, where they would like it and any other suggestions. Possibly if we all put our head together(not literally of course) we come up with something and who knows this proposed trip may actually take off. Again I feel 2007 is too far into the future and I would like something a little closer, what do you all think/suggest.
