View Full Version : Suggestion For New Forum
Popol Vuh May 9th, 2004, 06:38 PM Right now there are 585 members of this message board. I think there are about 230 of these who have never posted a message. Some of these seem to show up at times reading but do not post. I asked myself why and there are probably many different reasons.
One reason though might be like I felt the first time. Why post if I have nothing sensible to say. I really didn't know anything about John Wayne except that I liked his movies. The fact that I'm coming back here so frequently is due to the friendly atmosphere. Chesters warm welcome and the help I get once I ask a question regardless of how stupid the question is. I really just registered to be able to search. It was pure coincidence that I stumbled over a topic that I felt I had anything to say about.
Now I have seen other message boards have a Welcome or Hello section. This might be an idea so that people who don't really feel they have that much to say can get in an opener. They can just say a couple of things about themselves or say hello.
Does this sound like it could be an idea for this message board? Comments please even if you don't like the idea.
Robbie May 9th, 2004, 09:38 PM Hi Popol
I had the same idea and I agree with you 100% maybe the forum could just be devoted to why they are fans of John Wayne, I also think that members whom have been here for between 6 months and one year or over and whom have not posted should be erased, if this happens and they realise about it it may just rekindle their interest. A final possibility as you said Popol could be that upon registering they have to make a post possibly into a section titled newbie talking about themselves.
Just a few suggestions nothings serious or problematic.

Hondo Duke Lane May 9th, 2004, 11:34 PM Popol Vuh,
Registration is free, and we offer no time limit on when you can post. We had a person who signed up back in May 2003, and didn't post until January or February 2004. That person posted that he or she took a long time to post but said that they would come on board to read. As a guest you are limited to what you see on board, but with membership you can have access to more things like the suggestion box.
I won't argue that there are many who have not been back for a long time. We don't have that information or we moderators don't know who lurks. Kevin might have access to that. So I can't tell you anything about that, and we've had opportunities for anyone to post in a topic about "Why you became a John Wayne fan" which should have everyone to respond to that topic.
I'm not sure if that would work. Some just don't respond. We've talked about eliminate non posters, and just haven't made a decision yet. We haven't talked about this issue in a long time, so I will pass this along to the moderators and administrator. I know that Robbie has requested this a while back. We haven't met in a while and will get together and bring this up.
Thanks for the comments. We will discuss options.
Cheers, Hondo B)
Popol Vuh May 10th, 2004, 05:39 AM Just to clearify. My intention was not to eliminate anyone, rather give those who don't know too much about John Wayne (like myself) a chance to get started posting. People may be fans without being able to contribute that much when you veterans start a discussion. :)
Hondo Duke Lane May 10th, 2004, 05:09 PM Popol Vuh,
I understand what you are saying. I'm not sure what we can do, but I think that those who signed up just enjoy reading what others write, and maybe they'll answer or post soon enough. We have talked about making things easier to read. We have so much in here that you'd have to read for a month and still not catch up. We haven't met in a while and we have discussed having a FAQ section for common facts about John Wayne. We'll have to look into this again. I mean when you have two of us at almost 1100 posts and a few others over 500, there's been a lot of postin' out there.
Cheers, Hondo B)
kilo 6 March 5th, 2006, 09:57 AM Hello All
I am posting here as I feel there is a perspective here that new members might feel empowered by. I have said more inane and off the wall things on this board then I care to list. There is definitely room for more opinions and sources of information. Do we have members from all continents, how many countries? I wonder how many members have posted in the last month. Speaking only for myself I would like to suggest that new or old members believe that they should share their thoughts, knowing that I will respect and appreciate any decent non radical offering. I am not big on prejudice and yet even that is \ of need to improve a dynamic. Hope anyone who reads this might take the plunge and post or post more often. cheers murray :)

Hi Kilo
I agree with what you are saying, but I just thought I'd comment on this anyway since you brought an old dinosaur thread back.
After I started this thread there has actually happened a lot since the whole newbie forum got started after this thread was started. I am also pretty sure that only parts of the posts in this thread survived the great server crash a couple of years ago. There was a little bit more discussion before Kevin and the mods implemented it.
I see that a lot of the new members have made their first posts in this forum. I would also like to say that there is a small group of great people in here who are also very good at welcoming people who post here the first time.
Still I agree 100% with you in that anyone who is considering posting should just go ahead and do it since this is a great place to learn about John Wayne, westerns or movies in general, and I think you will find that there are few message boards where you likely to meet more friendly people.
Regards
Popol Vuh
