Looks like this was one of the bunch of topics that was lost. I picked Maureen O'Hara as my favorite actress to play opposite of Duke. She was great in everything they did, even Big Jake.

Even though she wasn't in Big Jake all that long, her presence was known throughout the movie because of the strong character she played.

Hi

Joanne Dru

Next to Maureen O'Hara you got the feeling that she was able to stand up to John Wayne.

Ringo,

We had a crash back in August, and lost a lot of posts. For some reason we didn't have a back up and well, we lost some great posts, and had to back track to fill in. We haven't got everything back yet, and we may never, but feel free to add your two cents worth.

I think the chemistry between Wayne and Katharina Hepburn in Rooster Cogburn, It is wonderful to see in my opinion the greatest 2 of hollywood acting together.

Since we lost some posts I wanted to add my 2 cents again. Any Duke movie that had Maureen O'Hara in it was tops in my book. She always got a great performance out of Duke!!

Hi

In her recent Richard and Judy interview Maureen went over the stunt she did in McLintock where she fell into the horse trough. If you think that despite all of the assistance advice and help she received from the stuntmen for that sequence, if she had got it wrong she could have broken her back, neck or if she had been lucky her legs, she had to have been some lady.

For me, it's got to be Maureen O'Hara. She was so good in all of her appearances with Duke, I don't see how anyone else could compare, although I do love the tragic Gail Russell.

Another fun O'Hara film is "Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation" from 1962, she and Jimmy Stewart are great together and make a believable couple.

Hi Mary.

I'm not the person on this message board with the most knowledge of John Wayne movies, but I couldn't remember Johnny Cash and John Wayne in a movie together. I did a search of joint ventures on the IMDB site and it did come up with one hit, but this was a TV-show where John Wayne only narrated. From what you told us from the plot it might seem as this is the movie you are looking for though:

A Gunfight (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0067168/)

Kirk Douglas starred in it though, not John Wayne.

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will be quick to correct me though. There is an astounding amount of knowledge about John Wayne on this message board.

I say Maureen O'Hara and Katharine hepburn, I think if he had played earlier with K.H. they would had made some great movies together, she seems to love that big man in Rooster Cogburn. And they do have some funny moments togehter in the movie.

Maureen O'Hara of course! She's a polished sophisticated woman.....until her Irish temper gets the better of her! I love that....and I can sympathize about the temper.

I must have been asleep at the wheel - I thought I had put my 2 cents worth in on this topic. Anyway, my choice would be Maureen O'Hara, hands down. She and the Duke had a rapport both on and off screen that is very difficult to find with any other screen couple.

Maureen O'Hara. Because she and the Duke were good friends, She could stand up to him better than any other film actress. She still could love him like I do when he swats her on the backside. I would say I would pick Patricia Neal as a second. Wish they had done more movies together. I love it when she says, " Rock, I'll be right here".

It would have to be Maureen O Hara for the chemistry and friendship between to pair. Claire Trevor would be next with Lauren Bacall in third
position.

Maureen O'Hara, although my favorite actress in a John Wayne movie wasn't on the list, Ella Raines. So of those on the list I chose O'Hara.

I have to go with Maureen on this one, I especially like the story she tells of when they were rehearsing a scene, Duke has just finished reading his lines, leans forward and whispers " Okay Maureen your chance to steal the scene, "If You Can". As if intending to get a more impassioned response. They had such a great rapport, on the set as well as off.
Besides Maureen has always been one of my favorite actresses, just look at the body of work she has done.
I would place Claire Trevor and Katherine Hepburn in a tie for second.

When I took the pool I figured Maureen would win when it came to votes. Yet, I'm surprised at the margin of her win.

I picked Gail Russell. Not for a valid good reason, but I choose her because of her looks. She is very stunning in the Angel and The Badman.

When I was catching up on posts re the birthplace museum there was mention of Mrs Oharas illness. I wonder if it would be in good taste if the board were to communicate the overwhelming level of appreciation demonstrated by this poll to the attn of the Ohara website in hopes that she might be comforted hearing about it. Mrs Ohara helped create the magic perhaps we could thank her in this humble way.

I thought Vera Miles worked well with Duke.

She didn't do that much with Duke. She was in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance but most of her scenes were with Stewart. In Hellfighters, she wasn't in that picture that much but she did have some good scenes with Duke. Let's not forget The Green Berets which had her scenes deleted from the movie. And yes there is The Searchers but like LV, she had her scenes with someone else. I agree with you but there were many other actresses who did more with Duke and worked well.

Maureen O´Hara fits the Duke best and Gail Russel was so beautiful (a few weeks ago I watched the movie "Seven Men from Now" starring Randolph Scott and Gail Russel, produced by John Wayne - wonderful!), but I choose Katharine Hepburn, because she was great on Duke´s side in "Rooster Cogburn" - and she ist my favourite female actor!

Even though I think Lauren Bacall did a great job, I would have liked to see Maureen O'Hara in the Shootist. And while thinking of it wouldn't it have made the Shootist even more great if they had had the other two bad guys be guys that were bad guys in his other movies be on the movie. I love the Shootist don't get me wrong, but it still would have been cool, just like haveing Richard Boone on it. Not that we can change anything just commenting.
