I'm voting for Fort Apache as my fav JW Cav movie.

Partly because it also has so many great actors in this film and partly because it was filmed in Monument Valley.

Some of the actors who did an excellent job in it were:

    The Duke.
    Ward Bond.
    Victor McLaglen.
    John Agar.
    Henry Fonda.
    Pedro Armendariez.

Just to name a few. The Ringo Kid.

I went with She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, with Fort Apache a very close second. What I like the most about Yellow Ribbon is it shows Duke's range as a great actor very early in his career.

I will for go for "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" in Color as number one, and "Rio Grande" second. Fort Apache was great also but I think Duke got Up-Staged by Henry Fonda and Fonda played such a Jerk. I had a Col. just like that in the U.S.A.F. in the 1950s. Chilibill

"Fort Apache" is my favorite. I like the ensemble of characters with the exception of Shirley Temple. I think she's the only sour note. IMO, she "overplays" her role.

I picked Rio Grande for my choice because of Maureen O'Hara (their first movie together), and the chemistry of the movie that made it a great, great conclusion of the trilogy.

I don't think of Rio Lobo as a cavalry movie.

    Cheers B)

Thank you kind gentlemen for answering my question. I too like Fort Apache the best with Rio Grande as a close second. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is third only because it seemd as if all the characters over-played their roles a bit--unless of course that was the impression that John Ford meant us to have? T.R.K.

I go for :) She wore a yellow ribbon ^_^ , but I must add that I find that the Horse soldiers is good too, in that one I see a little of Thomas Dunsons temper(Red River, of course), in the scene were he stands in the bar in newton station, telling hannah what he thinks of surgeons.

Well, I liked them all. I first saw The Horse Soldiers about 15 or so years ago and loved the music played. After years and years od searching, I finally know the song the Confederates are singing as they are riding past the Union Cavalry on the opposite bank of the river. "Bonnie Blue Flag."

"hurrah, hurrah, for Southern rights hurrah, hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears the single star."

Another tune I think was "Yellow Stripes" by: Stan Jones. I wonder why his music has never been released on CD yet?

I'm going to have to go with "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon". The Duke was absolutely Brilliant in his role as an ageing soldier.

I voted for the always underrated Rio Grande. Love the leisurely (even for Ford) pace, the songs and Victor Young score.

Thats a toughie! All are good, but Yellow Ribbon has got to be tops followed by Horse Soldiers!

Arrg, seeing this poll again reminds me that Fort Apache is still not on DVD. I wonder what they are waiting for?
