OH, I saw the RACE a few times....Hmmm, that wasn't the camel one, it was the horse race, right? Was Ben Johnson the other rider? Seems like Paladin rode for the old chief as he was the one who hurt the chief's Indian rider.....I may have this mixed up with something else. I am pretty sure I must have seen the Fifth Bullet also, what was it about? I didn't pay much attention to Ben back then. The first time or two I saw him YEARS ago, he gave a rather "wooden" type performance, and I never paid attention to him until I started my book research and kept hearing great things about him. Dick and a few others must have really been good at teaching acting, because Ben got a LOT better. I think Pappy Ford helped him a lot also.

Nope,I am a 62 year old woman named Keith, LOL. Go see my two albums on my profile and read what the pictures say. They will give you a pretty good idea of me. If my sources come up with it, I will let you know. RIDE TALL,

Ben Johnson was good in Head of Hair, but I prefer The Fifth Bullet and The Race to that episode. HoH was overly melodramatic and Ben Johnson wasn't well cast as a Native American, IMO. It may have been the first episode in which he appeared. Boone was generous to new actors and extended a helping hand to them with parts in his series.

Tastes in television have changed with economic times as well. During the Fifties and Sixties the economy was growing and fuel was cheap. Drama tended to be heavy in contrast.

HGWT was an excellent example of the contrast of the inverse variation law of entertainment to economic chaos. Here's how it works: when the economy is good, more entertainment is dramatic and complicated. When the economy is bad more of entertainment is comic or light and amusing. At the moment I cannot recall whose theory this is...perhaps it will come to me. Google is my friend.

That was indeed the moulee (sp?) horse race that ended with the running fight. Ben Johnson was fighting a long protracted physical fight with Boone. It was a great episode and no camels were involved. Ben Johnson did improve his acting. Richard Boone taught many Hollywood actors their craft.

At the moment I'm unable to put my hand on my copy of A Knight Without Armor In A Savage Land, Richard Boone's biography, but actors whose names you would recognise. Currently I'm upgrading my electronic equipment and all my books are in disorder as a result. When things are returned to their places I can name names. You may be surprised.

Hal Needham wrote in his autobiography, Stuntman (this is from the Kindle version, always at hand):

Nobody was more important to my career than Richard Boone. For six years I worked on thirty-nine episodes a year of Have Gun-Will Travel. It was a great opportunity for me to hire all those stuntmen who were stunt coordinators on other shows but who didn't know me, and an opportunity for me to showcase my talents and be creative with Boone's blessing.

    IMDB
After eight years, Paladin tries to repay a convict for the lie he was told when he arrested him. "I promise you a fair trial" is what he said. The old man who turned that into a lie still wants him dead even from the grave. So he sends five to avenge him - or was it only four?
Bartlett punches Paladin when he gets out of jail and Paladin still escorts him safely home. Along the way they encounter hired assassins and murderers. At Bartlett's home Richard Boone's son, Peter, debuts in the part of Johnny Tecumseh Bartlett.

I wrote this 3 times but each time I lost my post to hitting the 'Back' key by accident. There was more information before but I've lost heart now for fear I might delete this one as well.

Hi Peridot, It has been bothering me that I never mentioned again about the camel. You know there was an episode where Paladin entered a long desert race with a camel don't you? I think it was just called the Great Mohave Chase. Still looking for Nimoy. Have you found him yet? KP

Yes, that was the title of the episode. Paladin won the race, restored the water rights to the town and earned himself a large cash reward as well. BTW, Gene Roddenberry wrote that one along with Herb Meadow.

No, I'm afraid I've never been able to figure out which episodes Leonard Nimoy was in, or even if he appeared in any HGWTs. I managed to spot his appearance in THEM, so I have a good eye for finding him in uncredited extra film roles...but even on my large screen HDTV with my upscaling Blu Ray player (it improves the resolution of DVDs) I haven't been able to find him yet. I read this claim in Wikipedia so it may not be valid. Still, it makes sense. LN appeared in Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Bonanza as well as other Western genre. Why not HGWT?

If anyone out there has this information, please share.

Actually, I have checked those thoroughly with the exception of The Savages. That episode has yet to be released on DVD.

OTOH, the Great God Roddenberry asked for the Holy Nimoy to be Spock based upon his appearance in another television series, the name of which escapes me at this instant.

Thumbs up David Mamet To Write Reboot of HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL

Since CBS cancelled his series “The Unit” in 2009, David Mamet hasn’t had a lot brewing on the small or big screen -- his last feature-length film was the 2008 MMA drama “Redbelt.” But the acclaimed playwright has some new television work in the pipeline in the form of a reboot of the classic western series “Have Gun - Will Travel.”

There’s been talk about a reboot of the 1957 CBS series before, with one of the stranger takes being an Eminem-starring film set in the modern day, but it looks like the network was impressed enough by Mamet's pitch that they’ve put the project into development, with Mamet to write it and possibly helm the pilot. The original series followed Paladin, a Civil War veteran and top-notch gunfighter who becomes a “gun for hire” and scours the west looking for situations that required his particular expertise. He “preferred to settle problems without violence but stood his ground when provoked.”

Mamet has made his bread and butter on stoic and efficient characters (check out his underrated 2004 film “Spartan”) so this subject matter seems like a perfect fit for him. There’s no word yet on when the series will be set, or even a timeline for production, but we’d imagine with the western genre being out of fashion these days that it’ll be set in the present.

Although the series may be a long way off, Mamet fans don’t have long to wait for a new project. He has an upcoming Phil Spector biopic in the works for HBO with Al Pacino starring as Spector and Helen Mirren as his defense attorney from when Spector was put on trial in 2007 for the murder of actress/model Lana Clarkson. That may see a premiere at the end of the year and there’s also the Broadway revival of the classic Pulitzer prize-winning “Glengarry Glen Ross, which is scheduled to open on November 11th.
Considering the original idea for Paladin was in a contemporary setting, perhaps there's a certain symmetry to this...

Well, too bad. I would certainly like to see someone BRAVE enough to put out a really quality Western weekly TV show. Thought something based along the HGWT lines.......not as complicated as a WT type, would do great. I don't watch TV as I became thoroughly bored by the mindless type comedies, etc. that are put out now. And reality shows......LORD....never thought the American public was that dumb. Oh, some hillbilly types maybe, but some of MY friends watch them!
Well, darn, thanks for posted so I can quit hoping. HAGO, Keith

Please join the Group Watch....it is my choice this time. I plan to make it a lot of fun so you can comment right along all the month. Even if you don't like the movie.....that is OK....you can be someone that others an bounce off. Hope to see you there........and I have STILL not given up on good old Leonard in a HGWT episode. Oh, never told you, one of my friend's wives, used to write the Star Trek books, LOL. Don't know HOW I forgot that! Heck, she can probably help me with some things. She wrote screen plays also....sometimes under her name but she had a pen name, also.

    HAVO, Keith

AFA HGWT, let's see what develops. Westerns are expensive, what with the horses and suchlike.

How have you not asked her about LN in HGWT? I thought you were my friend! [/joking]

Group Watch, is that a thread here somewhere? I don't know what that means...I'd love to join but I haven't a clue what it is.

Hi Mona, Well, I know she knew all the Star Trek folks. Maybe she knows someone who can tell us about Leonard in HGWT. Heck, she might even have some stuff she would share with you.
I will have to contact her......been a long while. Can't remember I forgot all about her....she is younger than I, so a good chance she won't be a dead end, LOL!

OK, the GW. I am taking over it...did last month because Dooley posted a movie and took a vacation, LOL....then, the thread owner Irish Duke, asked me to choose a new movie......darn, Duke non western. We alternate with Duke Western. Look back at Tall in the Saddle of last month. I did a complete screen catch of Duke and Ward's fight, LOL.........showed how much better they were they the doubles they used......ridiculous when they practiced at the farm and at each other's houses all the time! Also showed him kissing the lead full up, not turning his back as usual and questioned if he might be split up with wife?
Anyway, I am attempting to get folks to DISCUSS they movie not just say what they thought about it once. I am offering sketches to First answer questions, etc.

So, here is where THIS one starts. You can go back and look at last month's if you want.....folks were JUST beginning to get the idea, and are doing well so far this month.
    http://www.dukewayne.com/showthread.php?t=5797&page=2

The ...danged underline is stuck.....fight scenes screen catches are really amazing. Love my new toy, LOL! Have about 200 of them ready for this month's Group Watch. So, if you have EVER watched Hatari, read what had been said and comment on them. If not, comment anyway. I am hoping to get a running commentary.....folks will want to see what is on the GW every day. Lot of work, but...to me, that is what hosting a thread is all about. Trying to show the guys, LOL!

I will contact my friend.....more detective work, LOL. Here is a bit about her on Wikipedia:
