    Talking

I have many, but I always loved the line he used in McLintock. "I was called that once. Looked it up in the dictionary. 'Best you don't know what it means." And another is from True Grit when he tried to issue papers on a rat, "Mr. Rat! I have a writ here says your to stop eating Chin Lee's corn meal forth wit. Now, it's a rat writ, writ for a Rat, and this is lawful service of same." Ahh, I could go on and on. dukefan1
"I couldn't go to sleep at night if the director didn't call 'cut'. "

Duchess, your right, that line is hilarious.
She says, "I am well aware that I am a homely woman Mr. Lane."
And he says, "Aw, I didn't mean that. Besides, looks ain't much."
I laugh at that one every time.
Another good line from McLintock is, "Don't push me beurocrat."
And what ever the politicians' name was,"Cuthbert--------- is a cull."
    "A what?"
"A cull is a specimen so worthless that you have to cut him out of the herd. Cuthbert is the one at whom I would throw my rope." : :

    pompy,
That's one of my favorite Duke lines, too, but I like the full version:

"I know, I know, I'm gonna use good judgement. I haven't lost my temper in 40 years. But, pilgrim, you caused a lot a trouble this morning (poking the other fellar in the ribs with the shotgun); might've gotten someone killed. And somebody ought to belt you in the mouth, but I won't.... I won't..... The HELL I won't!"

As a matter of fact, there seems to be several good Duke lines from just about every one of his movies.

In McLintock! Maureen O'Hara gets in several good lines too!!!

In the same scene, but earlier: "There's a lot things I ain't sayin' to ya fella, as long as you got that shotgun in my middle!"

One of my favorite lines is from my all-time favorite movie The Quiet Man: "I hope you can stay around for the finish".

There are two lines in McLintock, I beleive they were both in the hotel when he went to meet his wife........One was "I'd like to know what put the bur under your saddle about me", and the other is something to the effect of "Out of all the women in the world it has to be you that stirs me" something like that anyway....They just give me goosebumps.

I cannot believe no one has mentioned my favorite from Eldorado, when the Duke returns to town to save his drunk sherriff friend, and after waking him with a bucket of cold water, the drunk sherriff says to the Duke "what are you lookin at?" Angry, Wayne replies "I'm looking at a tin star with a drunk pinned on it."

Another favorite is from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance....

"No Valance...you pick it up" (referring to the Duke's steak that landed on the floor after Liberty tripped the waiter bringing the plate to the Duke's table).

Yes General S Price that is a classic line but its real hard to pick your favourite line against the lines that show our hero,s sence of humour in the fighting kentuckian he tells oliver hardy (from laurel & hardy Fame) to blow meaning blow the buggle and he does just that blow without the buggle to his mouth, and in Rio Lobo frenchie is on bended knee to the leading lady when jw says "Are you coming with us or have you got something better to do" but not to forget Jack Elam had some great lines to like "he,s at anther gate now looking for St Peter,my other favourite line comes from Tall in the saddle when jw and George "Gabby" Hayes find themselfs in a shack sheltering from the rain and after jw has been hired to watch for russlers George G Hayes is drying his clothes by the fire and putting them on as they dry but hes sitting under a water jug when a shot hits the jug a George get wet "are you alright" "I Will be if i ever get Dry" I know Jw had a great sense of humour and loved his job and theres a lot of us thank him for that.

One line that is a favorite of our seven year old son comes from The Fighting Kentuckian. John Wayne says, "Anymore talking would be a waste of time."
Oliver Hardy responds with, "It sure would." They exchange knowing glances and then both swing punches at a guy and knock him out.

    :D

Another good one is from Dark Command...when Wayne all but accuses the guilty Walter Pigeon of cattle rustling under the cover of school-teacher...Pigeon fires at Wayne, "Cattle-rustling and school-teaching don't mix...you know that!" to which the Duke replies..."I know it. Make sure you do."
