    Personal Quotes

    on Duke
Duke hasn't any patience with anybody: his family, other actors, anybody. If you've got a Big Name Star, he'll keep quiet. Howard Keel on "The War Wagon," I remember. One day Duke started pushing him around, grabbing him, showing him how to play the scene. After the scene was over, Keel said, "If he puts his hands on me again, I'm gonna clobber that son of a bitch."
    on director/producer William A. Wellman
Wild Bill Wellman -- a great guy.
    on director John Ford
One time I called him John and he told me that only his enemies called him John. "Call me Jack," he'd say. Well, it's a funny thing with Jack: socially, you never wanted any part of him. He just wasn't that pleasant. For one thing, he was a reformed alcoholic; he didn't drink and he didn't think anybody else should. He also liked to play cards, but if you won you were a no-good son of a bitch.
    on director Josef Von Sternberg
Josef was a strange guy. He made a couple of great films and became very hard to get along with

Re: Duke's Cinematographers- William H. Clothier

Cinematographers, were responsible for putting the magic
onto the silver screen, and without them, the spectacle would never be!

    Four such men,
William H. Clothier,Archie Stout, Winton Hoch and Bert Glennon
were without doubt very special to Duke and his movies.
I will profile Archie Stout and Winton Hoch later!
Clothier and Hoch, more or less took over the mantle,
from Stout for the years after!

William H. Clothier was involved with Duke, in various capacities,
    in 22 movies,and one documentary

    "American Masters"
    - John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and the Legend
    [/B](2006) TV episode .... Himself
The Train Robbers (1973) (director of photography)
    Big Jake (1971)
Rio Lobo (1970) (director of photography)
    Chisum (1970) (director of photography)
The Undefeated (1969) (director of photography)
    Hellfighters (1968)
The War Wagon (1967) (director of photography)
    McLintock! (1963) (director of photography)
    Donovan's Reef (1963)
"Alcoa Premiere" - Flashing Spikes (1962) TV episode
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) (director of photography)
The Comancheros (1961) (director of photography)
    The Alamo (1960)
The Horse Soldiers (1959) (director of photography) (as William Clothier)
    Blood Alley (1955) (photography by)
The Sea Chase (1955) (director of photography)
    Fort Apache (1948) (uncredited)
    Jet Pilot (1957) (aerial photographer)
The High and the Mighty (1954) (aerial photographer)
Island in the Sky (1953) (aerial photographer)
The Big Stampede (1932) (camera operator) (uncredited)

Clothier as you can see from his filmography was involved,
in many other well known movies, with John Ford and James Stewart.

    When making The Alamo
Duke pacified John Ford by giving him some Second Unit work.
However, very little of Ford's work ended up in the movie.

    Clothier remarked later:-
I don't think we used three cuts that the Old Man did...
I would estimate it cost Duke over $250,000
to give Ford a Second Unit!
William H.Clothier along with a selected trusted few,
was to spend most of his career working with Duke.
