We are on the mailing list of the owner of Newt's John Wayne Site, and received our monthly newsletter in the inbox this morning. Check out the following, copied directly from that newsletter -

Who do YOU most identify as the "Greatest American"? Well, we would say it is John Wayne, of course! Well now is our chance. For the first time in American television history that question will be answered by the audience of the Discovery Channel as they count down the top 100 Greatest Americans this coming May. During this nominating phase, tell them the five people you would choose as great Americans. Make sure you use full names (first, last) and correct spelling. And make sure the nominees are or were U.S. citizens. We need to get John Wayne into the top few if we can, so use this link to nominate the Duke as the Greatest American.

Apparently, you can make as many nominations as you wish, there doesn't appear to be a limit, so go for it!

    Chester and the Mrs.

Got mine in. I'd like to see who you listed after Duke. I put in Thomas Edison, Ronald Reagan, Thomas Jefferson, and Helen Keller.

Keller overcame a lot and help handicap citizens overcome their handicaps.

Sorry Stumpy, but I didn't know your last name :P

    Cheers B)

Surely you must be one of them, and there are five slots in which to make nominations :D .

Hondo, in addition to the Duke, I nominated George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ronald Reagan, and Patrick Henry. I appreciate your nomination of Helen Keller - truly a remarkable woman!

    Hi

Perhaps I'm in a contentous mood but imo the Greatest American was Mrs Wallace Simpson, a women who without doubt altered the course of history in the 20th Century.

If she hadn't met and subsequently married Edward VIII he would have gone on to rule England as a weak and useless King, who would have appeased Hitler, there would have been no Winston Churchill no Second World Warand no freedom fror the world.

All right you Guys and Gals I had to Vote more than one time!!! My first list is,

    George Washington
    Abraham Lincoln
    Ron Reagan
    Teddy Roosevelt
    John Wayne

    My second Vote was,

    Thomas Jefferson
    Helen Keller
Winston Churchill , I think His Mother was American?
    Cochise- The Great Apache Chief!
Quanah Parker-The Great Comanache Chief, He was Half White on His Mother's side!

The reason for the Two Native Americans is that because I am a Half Breed Red Skin, and these two made it posible to live in the Southwest part of the U.S.A. as we do today by making a Honorable Peace with the White People of that time, and they were the First Americans any way!!! And Without Them DUKE would not have had anyone to Fight with in all those Great Horse Soldier Films!!! Besh Neze Chilibill

    Oh I forgot STUMPY!!!

    Arthur,

You are a veritable fountain of knowledge in a veritable mountain of areas! Thank you so much for your offering, whether it is out of contentiousness or not . From another message board that I frequent, one of your countrymen made a comment that suggested another interesting sequence of events that changed the history of the world. He commented that <<<until Tyndale translated the Bible, English as a language barely existed; fifty years later we had Shakespeare.>>> There was the implication that, with divine intervention, the English language went on to rule the world.

(How's that for going completely, totally off topic ?)

Well me being completely unethical I have voted for the Duke three times and put him in number one position each time and I will do so again.

A little question out of context who on this messageboard believes Duke was the greatest American and why as I would simply be interested in your opinions being a Brit I would probably have different reasons for likeing him than you Americans.

With regards to the greatest Amercian list I would be in favour of Audie Murphy being on the list not so much for his acting but for what he achieved durring the second world war.

    Regards
    Robbie

    Fair Question, Robbie.

We have established on this message board that John Wayne was not perfect, and he'd agree with that as well. Duke is well know through his acting, first. After establishing himself as a movie star, there are many examples of a good moral and honest man. He help those who couldn't not only in the U.S. but around the world.

He was instrumental in getting running water in Chupaderos, Mexico by drilling a well and also put in a play ground for the children. Not because he was asked but because he saw something that was needed there.

Duke was always supported for the troops first, no matter the reason for the war. They were making the sacrifices, and they should be honored. It showed during WWII, Korean, & Vietnam wars.

He always visited those who requested him to visit in hospitals. There are numerous occasions that he did that.

He donated his time for worthy causes in diseases & tragedies.

He was very generous with gifts and time with people and friends.

There are more but some might want to chime in on that.

    Cheers B)
