  • Well it's here, and we all are pretty excited about this offer. It might be as close to having John Wayne on TV as you can get. He was offered the part of Marshal Matt Dillon and he turned it down but recommended to James Arness, and the rest is history. Anyway, it is being offered in a collector's edition. You have Kitty, Doc, and Chester. Here we go.

    Go to Gunsmoke

  • Looks like a good deal Hondo.

I just wanted to mention to people though that if you agree to buying the first 2 then you are signed up to receive the next in the series for $14.99 plus $4.99 shipping every 4-6 weeks. Not trying to rain on your parade just informing people of what the offer entails.

  • We Gunsmoke fans have a lot to cheer about these days! There's this DVD release, which covers the 30 minute episodes from the first six seasons, then there's encore westerns airing uncut, uninterrupted shows from the seventh to eleventh seasons and finally (though not uncut or commercial free) there's TVLand's airing of the twelfth through twentieth(!) seasons. Not bad!

I'm only 33, so Gunsmoke is before my time. On top of that, the show wasn't syndicated in my neck of the woods, so I didn't get to enjoy this wonderful show until the Family Channel showed it on Saturday afternoons back in the late 1980s-early 1990s. I could have used Matt's strong character and wisdom as a kid.

  • Have you ever wondered if Gunsmoke and Bonanza were in competition with each other? Which one do you like? It seems that Gunsmoke was on first (not including the radio program). So I guess that Bonanza was the western to take on Gunsmoke. Were they on the same night?

  • Hi Hondo

I should be ashamed to admit it but while I watched Bonanza and the High Chapperal quite regularly, especially in the re-runs I have to say for some reason I don't think I ever saw an episode of Gunsmoke,

Wagon Train was the same on British television it was on at nine o'clock on a Monday night amd after watching the first ten minutes I would nod off and miss the middle segment of the programme, never failed, they should have sold the programme as a cure for insomnacs.

The best one for me were Cheyenne, The Range Rider Bronco and Maverick

Here in the Staes, Gunsmoke was usually on Saturday nights. Bonanza was on Sundays at 9pm for most of it's run. I like both shows, but I lean towards Matt Dillon and the gang.

    "Off day."

  • I really remember Gunsmoke being on Mondays. Bonanza was on Sundays as I remember. It was off the air by the early '70s. But don't ever recalling Matt Dillon on Saturdays.

  • Well, you do remember correctly, Hondo. Maybe you aren't as old as you thought! Gunsmoke's US broadcast schedule is as follows:

    Sep 1955-Sep 1961 Sat 10:00-10:30
    Sep 1961-Sep 1967 Sat 10:00-11:00
Oct 1961-June 1964 Tue 7:30-8:00 (half hour shows repeated under the title "Marshal Dillon")
    Sep 1967-Sep 1971 Mon 7:30-8:30
    Sep 1971-Sep 1975 Mon 8:00-9:00

    "Day off?"
    "Off day."

  • If there are any "Gunsmoke" fans here you may want to check out the Starz/Encore Westerns Channel on August 26-28. They will be having a 50 hour marathon of the show to celebrate it's 50th anniversary. Should be fun.

They'd never forget the day,the stranger rode into town

  • I wish I could but, you guys elsewhere have all the great channels. Not that its a bad one but, the only marathon soon to come here is the Michael Landon Labor Day Marathon.
