When The Duke passed away a Japanese newspaper proclaimed "Mr. America Is Dead". Does anyone know what the paper said about his death, what the paper's name is and where I could possibly find a translated version of it? I always wondered what the Japanese had to say about his death. Especially considering the fact that many of his WWII movies dealt with fighting and killing the Japanese (i.e. In Harm's Way, Operation Pacific, They Were Expendable, The Fighting Seabees, Sands of Iwo Jima). So can anyone help me out?

Since THE ALAMO was the highest-grossing film at that time in Japan, they must have forgiven him by then.

They loved Gen MacArthur, too. And he was responsible for more actual Japanese deaths than even the Duke. However, MacArthur did govern their country with dignity and respect after the war. The Japanese proceeded to love most everything American after that (Baseball, Jazz, etc.)

    Dragn,

Though it is belated, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the John Wayne Message Board, the best of its kind on the 'Net. We see you have jumped right into the discussion with both feet - good for you :D !

It means that SO FAR, no one has read your question who knows the answer. Of course, maybe there isn't anyone here who knows . . . .

You might find older Japanese newspapers on microfilm at a major university - all you need then is someone who can read Japanese . At least you know what date to look for ;) .

    Again, WELCOME!

DRAGN; Welcome to this Great Site!

Just got back from another trip to Japan and they still are as Crazy about the Duke as they were in the early 1960s on a trip that I did then when I was a young fellow!
Every time the Japanese man that I stay with in Nirita Japan comes to the U.S. and brings other people with him to visit me , the first thing they want to do is have their picture taken with the Duke's Gun Belt on and holding His Colt 45 Pistol, with all the other John Wayne things that I have in my Den in the background and then go to The Grand Canyon, Sedona and Monument Valley to show them where Duke did all those Great Western films!!! They are worse than we are. Chilibill
