I just want to take this moment and wish the Duke a happy birthday. He's been an inspiration to all and to some. There's three people in this world that could move people like no other. First one is the Lord our savior and the second one is John Wayne. The third one is are parents. There all inspiration to us all. Again wishing the Duke a happy birthday. Wish he could be here to celebrate it.

Now on to alittle side note. Last night I was watching the news and I did almost a double take when I heard this. Yesterday the Afghan president Hamid Karzai was in Nebraska at a feedlot near West Point. He was there to talk about his agriculture is different from our agriculture and eveything else with it. Anyways the feedlot owner and Hamid started to talk about horses. Then Hamid decided he wanted to ride a horse. Well he got on a horse and when he did, he said this and you wont't belive it. " I FEEL LIKE JOHN WAYNE ". I about dropped to the floor. But it was cool to hear something like that. That even an Afghan president knows who John Wayne is.

I thought I share this with you all. God Bless and have a safe memorial weekend.

I would also like to wish Duke a happy birthday. I will lift a pint, or several of the black beer to his memory.

    Emmanuel.

    .............................

I'll try one of those black beers....THE QUIET MAN.

Don't forget that Turner Classis Movies is having Duke movies all day today. I also saw that AMC(American Movie Classics) was having some Duke movies as well but I tend to stay away from them now that there format has commercials.

    Happy B-Day Duke!!!

Howdy, and a Happy Duke Birthday to y'all!

Sheriff Art over at the McCandles Texas forum on Yahoo had some interesting tidbits, most of which we've all heard, but it was a nice birthday tribute nonetheless.

As a little treat for everyone I wanted to share a few stories that I came across about the Duke. I wanted to share them with you on his birthday.

John Ford loved to get away from it all and fish with his crew.* (Mostly made up of his stock company of actors.) This log entry is from one of those outings.

An entry in the logbook of director John Ford's yacht "Araner", during a voyage along the Baja peninsula, made a reference to one of John Wayne's pranks on Ward Bond: "Caught the first mate (John Wayne) pissing in (Ward) Bond's flask this morning - must remember to give him a raise."

This story came about one night when the Duke and Ward were relaxing (Meaning drinking) after a long day of shooting.* Ward Bond and the Duke, frequently played practical jokes on each other. In one incident, Bond bet Wayne that they could stand on opposite sides of a newspaper and Wayne wouldn't be able to hit him.* Ward Bond set a sheet of newspaper down in a doorway, John Wayne stood on one end, and Bond slammed the door in his face, shouting "Try and hit me now!" Wayne responded by sending his fist through the door, flooring Bond (and winning the bet).

The evening before a big shoot the Duke was trying to get some sleep in a Las Vegas hotel. The suite directly below his was that of Frank Sinatra (never a good friend of Wayne), who was having a party. The noise kept the Duke awake, and each time he made a complaining phone call the party would quiet down temporarily but eventually grew louder again.* Finally the Duke appeared at Sinatra's door and told Frank to stop the noise. One of Sinatra's bodyguards of about the same size as the Duke approached saying, "Nobody talks to Mr. Sinatra that way."* Wayne looked at the man, turned as though to leave, then backhanded the bodyguard, who fell to the floor, then Wayne knocked him out by crashing a chair on top of him. The party noise stopped and the Duke slept very well the rest of the night.

"How would I like to be remembered, well...the Mexicans have a phrase, 'Feo fuerte y formal'. Which means; he was ugly, strong and had dignity." (Time Magazine interview, 1969)

"The sky is blue, the grass is green. Get off your ass and join the Marines."
(Poem, "The Sky", the Duke read on his 1969 "Laugh-In" appearance)

I thought you might need a little chuckle on the Duke's Birthday!

See you along the trail my friends,

    Art
And also from Sheriff Art - a very concise summation on the life of our hero from the History Channel -

On this day in 1907 John Wayne was born.

Western hero John Wayne is born on this day in Winterset, Iowa, and christened Marion Michael Morrison. As a child, friends nicknamed the boy Duke, and he went on to play his earliest film roles under the name Duke Morrison. Wayne worked at Fox Film Corp. as a laborer in the late 1920s and began appearing in bit parts in 1928. Throughout the 1930s, he starred in mediocre westerns, sometimes filming as many as two a week. Wayne's breakthrough came in 1939, when his friend John Ford cast him in Stagecoach. Wayne went on to play larger-than-life heroes in countless movies, appearing in 250 films during four decades of acting. In 1969, he won an Oscar for his role in True Grit. He died from cancer in 1979.

    Happy 98th Birthday Duke!
JDeal, thanks so much for sharing your story - as Jay says, evidence that the Duke is a world-wide influence.

Finally, the attached picture is on the opening page of McCandles this week - I thought you'd enjoy it.

It nice to see that there are people that still remember Duke's Birthday, :D it is hard to believe that it is His 98th Birthday! Turner Classic Movies has Duke all day and I am am sitting here watching "The Angel and the Badman" for about the 100th time! And it is hard to believe that was over 58 years ago in Sedona.

    Happy Birthday Duke!!!

I'd like to add my Birthday wishes in memory of Duke. Though he is no longer with us and has been gone for almost 26 years, he stills lives in us with his movies, and life.

We have a lot of work to do to get together for his 100th B'day celebration. Just 2 years left to celebrate together a great legend and hero. Thanks everyone for sharing.

    Cheers B)
