We have had this kind of topic before, but I thought it would be good to do again. We all have John Wayne lingo down pat, especially phrases from his films that are really catchy...

Yesterday, I was walking toward the stairs, and said, "I am going up to get a pair of socks."

I instantly hear a response from my four year-old son, "You do what you think best, Ned"

My wife and I are still laughing about it... :

Anyone else have funny ones like that?

    Hi GSP,
Srange you should start this one,
my four year old son, also quotes the Duke,
but in this case, incorrectly of course, because he never said:-

'Get off your horse, and eat your cornflakes!'

I can't think of any current ones (although we do sometimes make reference to "burning daylight"), but my favorite was from when our now-9-year-old son was 3 years old, and he would run around wearing an over-sized Stetson, saying, "I a cowboy, I John Wayne!" We've told this story elsewhere on this board, but we went into a local restaurant, The Cowboy Restaurant, again when he was three, and there were pictures of the Duke as part of the decor, and here's this little kid pointing to them and saying, "Hey, it's John Wayne!" The staff were totally blown away : .

    Hi,
I think the most outstanding Dukeism,
    is the bold statement,

    'THAT'LL BE THE DAY'

I don't know about in the States,
but here in the UK, is seems to have crept into
the normal day to day language.
I often here people saying it, within their normal conversation!
    Best Wishes

    ee,

    That'll be the day!

You are right about that, around here it is a fairly common expression, and I bet most folks aren't aware that the phrase came from a John Wayne movie.

I don't use this line every day, but I do use it every time someone asks me if I trust them. I reply "Ya trust to much, you don't celebrate many birthdays. I kinda like it around here." Mark

Maybe we have another thread on this same topic . . . because I can't believe I didn't mention a phrase I use very often -

    Not hardly!

"That'll be the day" is probably the most used, even a song was made from that one.

Re: John Wayne In Everyday Talk

I run a distribution warehouse, and we have a ton of procedures that must be followed. Every now and then someone does not follow a tried and proven procedure and does something on their own usually ending in a disaster or an upset customer.
We must then have a meeting to discuss the gap and why it happened. This just happened a few days ago, and the person making the error tried to explain their thought process, in short, the meeting was getting out of control, so I just said, "I will do the masterminding around here." and settled the problem. I bet many JW fans have similar stories.
    Thank You
