I found this post over at imdb.com and thought it would be interesting for fans of the movie. I've never been a huge fan of the little kid, Hamchunk?, that pals around with Sgt. Peterson, one of Jim Hutton's best parts, but this poster proposed a different way for that relationship to go. It's pretty horrible what he says, but I couldn't help from laughing when reading this because the poster seems so serious. Judge for yourself.

    Here's the post:
I swear I hated that little kid. I wish he'd gotten killed, he was so annoying. If I'd been Peterson and he tripped me up like that and said "You funny", I'd have said, "You know what's funny?" and I'd have shot him, and said "That's funny."
    I hated that kid.

Remember, these aren't my words, but I wanted to share this with other members. If you're interested in reading the responses, here's a link. The post is under the question "Did anyone else hate Hamchuk?"

Sounds to me like that poster needs some professional help. Seriously though, he was a little annoying but I thought that Hamchuk fit perfectly in that movie. Last I heard, the one who played Hamchuk, was about to graduate from college somewhere in California.

Hamchuck and Jim Hutton were used as that old standby, comedy relief, to give some breathing room to the general seriousness to the movie. Yeah, Hamchuck was kinda annoying, but sometimes children can be like that. ("Are we there yet!"). But I certainly wouldn't go so far as that poster said - "I'd have shot him!"

    Like Carl and Jay,
It was light relief in a more serious film,
I certainly didn't find it annoying,
just enjoyed it, for what it was,

A little annoying? Yes. Shooting annoying? No. Some people need to watch what they type first, just like they should watch what they say first.

Too me he was just part of the movie. I think they wanted to show alittle of the human impact that the war had. The right choice is not always made, but it was a passable performance, I have seen much worse acting.

    Hi Todd,
    Same here!!
In fact I didn't even consider that the kid was annoying,
until reading the earlier comments on this thread.
I also agree with you, that to even put into print that someone should be shot,
is totally out of order, and in complete bad taste.
As I said earlier, I just thought, that the interaction
between the two, was just a pleasant part
    of the film,

    Cheers,

I found that is was a very important part of the movie. It is/or was true to life during the Vietnam War. We have a child who has lost his parents and has no one left. He shooses an American to attach to. Supposedly the Americans who invaded the country and killed wholesale, but in the eyes of a child he has found a hero who has come to save him, someone he could trust in and believe in. Much different than those that killed the Village Chiefs daughter raping her and killing the rest of the villagers because of their supposed collaboration with the Americans.

As far as annoying, well that all depends. What was your feeling at the end when he was told that Peterson was not coming back. I found it to be a very dramatic point in the movie.

I'll have to go with Chisum and EE on this one. I did not find the kid annoying at all. Rather just a sad situation for any child to be in. I enjoyed his character in the movie.

    Talking

I'll have to admit that it pulled on my heart strings when Hamchuk couldn't find Peterson in the choppers. I even felt sad when he lost his dog. Anoying? Nope. When someone posts a comment like that, you just gotta take it with a grain of salt.

    Hi Guys

    I haven't contributed for a while,
but I have to agree with the most of
    the above comments.
Let's face it the kid was handicapped
from the start with a name like that,
    "HAMCHUK"
It sounds like something you'd get from
    a pig. :
I thought that the young actor held his own
    in the movie.

Just to clarify, that wasn't from my post. I just wanted to share it with everyone. It's another example of how many people really dislike, and in some cases hate, this movie, but I've always enjoyed it.

And dukefan, I agree, I always get a little choked up when the kid can't find Peterson in the returning choppers. Just that face JW makes when he knows that he's gonna have to explain what happened, it's tough to watch.

The first time you saw this, were you completely taken by surprise when Peterson(Jim Hutton) was killed? I remember being shocked when I first saw that, and still am. Just like Jim Brown in The Dirty Dozen, I always find myself hoping that maybe this time, Peterson will make it.

    Hi Patrik,
I remember the same reaction to this. I didn't know can this relationship between Peterson and Vietnam kid be in real life - I have read some horrible things about that war - but I still love that movie.
