    Hi everyone,

I thought this might be fun. You all know how it was said that The High and The Mighty was the most requested film never to be released on DVD or VHS. Well, now that it has been released, I wonder what film now can hold that title? So, I came up with this idea. Everyone can post a list of their Most Wanted films that have never been released on DVD or VHS. Then we can look through them and see if we can find any common denominators. When you post please include: The Title and Year of the film, as well as a brief description and the name of the studio that owns the distribution rights. So, here's my list:

The Call of the Wild (1935) Stars Clark Gable and Loretta Young. (Fox) (RELEASED ON DVD ON AUGUST 15, 2006)

    Hi E.J.

Well there aren't many big John Wayne movies left that haven't been released so I guess "Big Jim McLain" would be the next on my list. Of the five you have listed I already have four on official DVD releases. "A Man Betrayed" is the only one missing. I guess we are talking strictly DVD now since this one and "Big Jim McLain" have been released on video.

The only other movie I could think of was "The Testament of Dr. Mabuse." Then it occured to me that I probably hadn't searched for it in the UK(it's German so I need it subtitled) and sure enough it has already been released. :D

I would like to see some of Harold Lloyds work released though. I haven't seen it since I was a child, so it might not be any good, but I would really like to see some of this stuff again.

    Popol Vuh,

There is a big box set of Harold Lloyd films being released this November. You can preorder it at:

    http://www.moviesunlimited.com/musite/hllo...3KB38RVSQJ2E981

Just for the record, I believe we need to confine this to Region 1 availability, just to keep it from becoming totally confusing. For those of you who live in other regions, you are certainly welcome to start another thread on this topic.

Remember, this thread is only for films not yet released on DVD or VHS.
Let's see what goodies you can come up with!

Thanks for that info. Looks like I have some ordering to do. :)

The reason I started talking "strictly DVD" is tthat I thought "A Man Betrayed" is the same movie as "The Wheel of Fortune" which has beean released on VHS in Region 1.

    Wheel of Fortune

    Am I Wrong?

Anyways I will leave you now to fight your region 1 battle.

    Popol Vuh,

I stand corrected! The VHS release of A Man Betrayed (aka Wheel of Fortune) is the official release from Republic Studios. I will remove it from my list. Thanks.

    Hi Keith,
I thought that it was in Dark Command or it is another title for the same film?

    Senta,

John Wayne and Claire Trevor made four films together. They are:

    Stagecoach (1939)
    Allegheny Uprising (1939)
    Dark Command (1940)
The High and the Mighty (1954)

    Great thread.

For me, THE most important film that needs to be released on DvD is:

</span></span></span> w/ Richard Basehart, Gary Merrill, Oskar Werner & Hans-Christian Blech.

Others that need to be released (not necessarily in thhis order) are:

Springfield Rifle. Gary Cooper and Lon Chaney Jr.
    Beau Geste. Gary Cooper.
Charge of the Light Brigade. Errol Flynn & David Niven.
Time Limit. Richard Widmark & Richard Basehart.
Hannible Brooks. Oliver Reed and James Donald.
    March Or Die. Telly Savalas.
Sergeant York. Gary Cooper & George Tobias.
Boys Town. Spencer Tracy & Mickey Rooney.
Mutiny on the Bounty. (The one w/ Chas Laughton & Clark Gable)
The Canterville Ghost. Robert Young & Chas Laughton.
Dawn Patrol. Errol Flynn, David Niven & Basil Rathbone.
Prisoner of War. Ronald Reagon & Steve Forrest.
    Dunkirk. Sir John Mills.
Fort Apache. John Wayne & Henry Fonda.
    The Unconquored. Gary Cooper.
    Fort Ti. George Montgomery.
Merrill's Marauders. Jeff Chandler, Ty Hardin & Claude Akins.
The Edge of Darkness. Errol Flynn.
Brotherhood of the Rose. Robert Mitchum & Peter Strauss.
A Family For Joe. Robert Mitchum.
The Red Badge of Courage. Richard Thomas.
Target Zero. Richard Conte, Charles Bronson, L.Q.Jones & Chuck Connors.
Ice Cold In Alex. Sir John Mills.
    Horatio Hornblower. Gregory Peck.
    Der Teufel's General. (Both versions)
Don't Go Near the Water. Glenn Ford & Earl Holliman.
Inspector General. Glenn Ford & Red Buttons.
Counterpoint. Charlton Heston & Maximilian Schell.
    The Naked Prey. Cornel Wilde.
The Last Command. Sterling Hayden & Ernest Borgnine.

    I'll think of more later.

Good topic idea ej. This is all I can think of now.

    The Alamo Director's Cut
    Three Godfathers
    Fort Apache
The Deserter( a quasi spaghetti western with Pat Wayne and a great cast)
    Merrill's Marauders
Wrath of God, with Robert Mitchum not the Klaus Kinski version
    The Cockleshell Heroes
    Operation Crossbow
    Tobruk

    Ringo,

Great list. However, the Gable/Laughton version of Mutiny on the Bounty is currently available on DVD. So is Beau Geste (it's part of Universal's Gary Cooper Collection). Boys Town is being released to DVD on November 8. Thanks for your response!

My list would have to include any John Wayne film that hasn't yet been released. But, at the top of my list of Duke films would have to be:
    1. The Three Godfathers (on DVD, maybe with some good behind the scenes features)
    2. John Wayne-Standing Tall (an exceptional documentary)
    3. A copy of The Searchers on DVD with the documetary "Turning of the Earth: John Ford, John Wayne and the Searchers"

    Hi all,
It is great suggestions and lists.

It is interesting, Carl, that you include The Edge of Darkness! It was last film with Errol that I have seen and I'm really didn't like it so much. I wanted more that Gentleman Jim will be ralised and Adventures of Don Juan. And I expecially wanted Crossed Swords to be restored and realised even on VHs if not on DVD.

Hi EJ, thank you. Also thanks for the info on those three movies. I had forgotten that Beau Geste had been part of the Gary Cooper collection. It's great news that MOTB is out--that's going to be one of my next purchases. Also looking forward to boys Town as well. Now if they'd just release Sergeant York sometime before Christmas, then I could carry on a family tradition again. The day before Thanksgiving or either before Christmas (and sometimes both occasions) my family would watch those three movies back-to-back. We would start it off with Mutiny on the Bounty, Boy's Town & ending with Sergeant York. I used to have a copy of all three on tape but loaned it out to a friend who accidently recorded over it some movie called: Down and Out In Beverly Hills.

Hi Senta, I admit it has been probably near 20 years since I last saw Edge of Darkness. I think the reason it stuck with me so well was because it had to do with the Norwegian Resistance to the Germans in WWII. Also because i'm half Norwegian ;-)) I don't remember really anything about the movie itself. I saw Gentleman Jim several months ago and that is one very good movie. I'm amazed at myself for liking that movie becuse im not very interested in movies about sports. However, I thought that this movie was very well made and thought that Flynn made a perfect Jim and that Ward Bond was great as that aging boxer. I've never seen Adventures of Don Juan but, that one is also high on my list of "to gets" when it's released. I'm not familiar with Crossed Swords but it does sound like a good film.

    Take care my friend--C.
