Last week I ordered from Amazon the 3-disc boxed set "Gunsmoke, the Director's Collection", which contains 15 episodes from that great TV show. Expect to receive it this week so that'll probably be the next Western I watch.

Inasmuch as Westerns were probably the favorite film genre of all time (at least it was mine), I'm kinda surprised that the entertainment industry hasn't begun marketing more DVDs like "Gunsmoke". That show and "Bonanza" ran for about 20 years on TV so they have plenty of material to work with. I'd also like to see "Maverick" (with James Garner) and "Wanted Dead or Alive" (with Steve McQueen) on disc. "High Chapparal" was another pretty good Western on TV.

I watched 'Bend in the River' with James Stewart. This is a fine psychological western that brings together interesting characters, darkness and morality in a sublime manner. I couldn't help but note Jimmy 'You'll be seeing me' speech was very much like the speech Duke gave in Red River after Montgomery takes the herd from him. However as much as I love James Stewart (and there is very few I rank ahead of him) he just didn't have the presence or delivery that Duke had so this speech was not nearly as effective as Dukes was in Red River.

    Hi Robbie

The Anthony Mann westerns that Jimmy Stewart did with him were really his best work. Even the Hitchcock movies dont compare.

I read somewhere that they fell out and never worked together again which was a shame.

Maureen O Hara wasn't to complimentary about Jimmy in her book

My favourites of the Mann/Stewrart westrerns would be Winchester 73 and Bend of the River.

My favorites were "The Naked Spur" and "The Man From Laramie" but all the Mann-Stewart movies were good.

I just picked up "The Man From Laramie" and I will be watching it tonight. As noted previously I watched "The Naked Spur" a couple days ago.

Now, to post this a second time - for the documentary That's Action!, that is - it also included clips from the following Westerns:

Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Dark Command, The Alamo, Fort Apache, My Darling Clementine, and a few other non-JW westerns that we didn't recognize.

It was a really enjoyable documentary on the different actions scenes in a variety of films.

    Hi Todd

You are going to like Laramie, its a great western with Stewart in it. I always felt that he got the wrong man at the end of the movie, but I'll wait to hear your verdict on this subject.

    Regards
    Robbie

"The Professionals," on TCM with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode and our recently deceased Jack Palance. One of the all-time great westerns with a terrific cast . I have this on DVD, but the cable presentation in widescreen was almost as good.
    Cheers - Jay

The New Frontier (1935) John Wayne. Very rare, not on DVD or VHS.

Watched the 3 Godfathers. Great story and the print looked so brilliant and vivid. Wonder have they remastered the release?
