Both of these films have something in common, besides The Duke. When it hit me the other day, I started wondering about the significance of it. Just for fun, I'll wait a day or so before I put up what it is, and in the meantime, you folks take a run at guessing, if you haven't already noticed it..... Grant

    Hi gr1087,
    Good Question?
Can't think of anything specific yet, but I'm a thinkin!!"!"!
So far all I can come up with is this.
It was probably the last couple of films, in which Dukes
love interests, were much younger women,
in fact Donovans Reef, was the last film that he allowed himself
to be cast in that role.

    Long shot, but still thinkin!!!!!

Hmm...I concur agree with Keith's assessment. Also, both films had Duke's love interest coming into the 'fold', when she was not wanted.

    Grant,

Both of these movies have a comedy flair in them. They also had a comedic relief in Red Buttons, and Lee Marvin.

    Both are from Paramont studios.

    Both were shot on lacation.

They were released in the early 60's and a year from each other.

    They were not westerns.

They were directed by legendary directors which were Duke's favorites.

I'm sure that you might be looking for something other than these but that's all I can figure at this point.

    Cheers B)

Some very good guesses put forward, but no cigars being handed out yet. I'll narrow it down a little farther by saying it doesn't have anything in particular to do with the cast or the story lines....it concerns one short scene from each flick. Answer tomorrow....Grant

So far a great trivia stumper Grant. I think my brain melted trying to figure this one out.

The moment you have all been waiting for.....both films feature the same song....."The Monkeys Have No Tails In Zamboanga." In Hatari, they were singing it (in a drunken moment) while driving back to the compound. In Donovan's Reef, it was Lee Marvin who seemed to be infatuated with the song. (Of course, in another drunken moment.) If you search the song title in Google, quite a bit comes back....it's actually a U.S. military song that goes way back to the early part of the 20th century in the Phillipines. Some even opine that the song is racist in nature.

There have been other "crossovers" of songs in other Duke movies, I just wonder why this obscure and historic little ditty.

This can't be just a coincidence.....any theories on the significance ?

    Thanks for playing gang! Grant

That song was also sung in They Were Expendable by, Ward Bond and the other PT boat crews in the bar when they were celebrating the retirement of the character played by Jack Pennick. Just before the announcment about Pearl Harbor came in.

Grant that's very good. I know that I wouldn't have gotten that one. but it is interesting that in what you get answers, and some things that are answered that we didn't think of before that question is asked. Thanks for that little tidbit.

    Cheers B)

Thanks Grant, I had never noticed that before. I knew it was sung in Donovan's Reef, but didn't remember it from Hatari. Great trivia!
