    HANK WORDEN

    ..

    ..

    INFORMATION FROM IMDB

    Date of birth
    23 July 1901
    Rolfe, Iowa, USA

    Date of death
    6 December 1992
Los Angeles, California, USA. (natural causes)

    Birth name
    Norton Earl Worden

    Sometimes Credited As:
Worden Norton / Heber Snow / Hank Warden / Norton E. 'Hank' Worden

    Spouse
    Louise (1940 - 1977) (widowed)

    Trivia
Often erroneously credited as the coach/manager/cornerman in the boxing flashback in The Quiet Man (1952), but according to Worden himself it is actually another actor of vaguely similar appearance.

Worked on several Tex Ritter Westerns billed as Heber Snow because the producer felt that a Mormon-like name such as Heber Snow would help the films do better business in heavily-Mormon areas such as Utah.

    Mini Biography
Raised on a cattle ranch in Montana. Educated at Stanford and the University of Nevada as an engineer.
Washed out as an Army pilot. Toured the country in rodeos as a saddle bronc rider.
Broke his neck in a horsefall in his 20s, but didn't know it until his 40s.
Chosen along with Tex Ritter from a rodeo at Madison Square Garden in New York to appear in the Broadway play
"Green Grow the Lilacs", the play from which the musical "Oklahoma" was later derived. Drove a cab in New York,
then worked on dude ranches as a wrangler and as a guide on the Bright Angel trail of the Grand Canyon.
Recommended by Billie Burke to several movie producers. Became friends with John Wayne, Howard Hawks,
and later John Ford, all of whom provided him with much work. Survived by adopted daughter Dawn Henry.
    Jim Beaver

Re: Pals Of The Saddle- Hank Worden

    Hello All

Hank Worden appeared in I think 3 Ford Westerns Fort Apache The Searchers and Horse Soldiers. Does anyone know the background of how Ford choose him.

In the Ford movies he tends to provide the comic relief that used to be associated with the director's brother Patrick who I think died shortly after the making of The Quiet Man.

Is this the connection to Worden appearances? Any thoughts or ideas

Re: Pals Of The Saddle- Hank Worden

    Hi Ethan

Should have said Francis not Patrick as well

Francis also had small parts in Wagonmaster and the 3 Godfathers so wonder was Hank Worden roles developed as replacement to Francis.

Re: Pals Of The Saddle- Hank Worden

I can count about 47 of his films that I have watched-many early ones that I never knew he was in but will look for his appearances the next time I get to see these. He was brilliant when he played the part of the trailer park owner in: "Every Which Way But Loose."

What a wonderful actor. A true gentleman and a man who actually broke his neck at a rodeo as a youth and it went unnoticed for twenty years. A regular in almost every Duke movie, and one character that I truly enjoy watching.

    Regards
    Ethan

If you have never seen the restored version of "The Big Sky" on TCM, check it out the next time it plays.
Hank's performance as Poordevil is a revelation. He steals every scene he's in, even from Arthur Hunnicutt, which amounts to Grand Larceny. It's Hank's finest moment after "The Searchers".
This is another example of an actor that has no equal in today's roster of players. No wonder I keep watching these films instead of the fodder that passes for entertainment these days.

    We deal in lead, friend.
