Duke and he met, when Grant had eloped with young actress Loretta Young,
Duke had just started dating Lorettas sister Polly Ann Young.
She appeared, in The Man From Utah , with Duke.

Grant Withers, became a life long friend and drinking partner of Duke.
Grant, Ward Bond, and Henry Fonda, would often join John Ford on the ARANER for booze cruises!

A friend of 30 years, Duke was sad and shaken, when Grant took his own life
in 1959. An alcoholic, who failed to recover, was one of the first of Duke's inner circle, to pass away
the following year, it was Ward Bond.

  • I'll have to say, you aced us on this one, Ethan!

We thought we knew all of the "pals" JW made movies with, but Grant Withers wasn't one we could put a face to. It's too bad IMDb doesn't have more photos.

However, we found one that still doesn't help us to really know who he is in Duke's movies, but we will be watching for him now in those nine movies. In any case, now we have a clue . . .

  • Grant Withers was kind of a pathetic man who drank away a promising career. I've read that Duke was sort of his enabler who gave him work and lent him large sums of money throughout his life he never paid back. I always remember him as the crooked Indian agent in Fort Apache. He was a card playing buddy of Fords.

  • Well, we pulled out our copy of Tycoon tonight to watch it, as it was one of the films with Grant Withers, and we hadn't seen it in a good long while.

In this film, he played the character "Fog" and he was one of the good guys in the story.

He definitely looked much older in this film than in the picture above. Drinking will do that to you :( .

    Chester :newyear:

  • Hey Keith and Mrs. C,

This is really good. I didn’t know all that. I seem to learn more and more everyday.

    Cheers B)
