    Trivia
Most remembered as Fay Wray's savior from the hairy clutches of King Kong (1933).

Interred at Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico, Division A, Block 48, Space 5.

Was part of a group of actors that John Wayne regularly used in his films.

    Mini- Biography
    from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
He was the courageous Jack Driscoll, who saved Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) from the clutches of her simian suitor in King Kong (1933), and the characterization dogged him throughout a lengthy screen career. Cabot, the scion of a family of diplomats, reportedly wangled a screen test out of RKO producer David O. Selznick after meeting him at a 1932 Hollywood party. He played bits and second leads in a number of RKO films over the next two years, including What Price Hollywood?,
The Roadhouse Murder (both 1932), Lucky Devils, Ann Vickers, The Great Jasper, Flying Devils, Finishing School and Murder on the Blackboard in addition to Kong. (He was also announced to play Count Zaroff in 1932's The Most Dangerous Game a part that ultimately went to Leslie Banks.) Tall and handsome, Cabot had a vaguely sinister, cold-blooded quality about him (as well as a harsh, metallic voice) that suited him for heavies as well as heroes. He played gangsters in Let 'Em Have It (1935) and Show Them No Mercy (1936), and was a chilling Magua in The Last of the Mohicans (1936).

Cabot alternated good-guy and bad-guy roles throughout his career, although he generally played heroes in B pictures. A longtime drinking buddy of John Wayne, he spent his later years working almost exclusively in the Duke's starring vehicles, such as The Comancheros (1961), Hatari! (1962), McLintock! (1963), The War Wagon (1967), The Green Berets (1968), Hellfighters (1969), Chisum (1970), and Big Jake (1971).

  • One of my favorite Cabot roles was that of Jeff Surrat in Dodge City. He was the perfect villain for Errol Flynns hero. I hated him so much in that movie, it really ticked me off that his death scene was kind of lame. Being shot off a horse as he and his gang are running away. It needed to be a real gunfight in the streets of Dodge.

  • Thanks Keith and Mrs. C for the great information on him. This is really great in knowing who they are.

    Cheers B)

  • Hi Cole,

Although no documented proof, so far!
It's highly likely that Cabot would have been
    the first choice, however
as he passed away in 1972,
Slim, may have well been the 'fill-in' for him.

  • I always felt that Wayne's Wil Anderson was supposed to be about the same age as Slim's character in The Cowboys. Wayne was 64 and Cabot would have been 67. I think that would have looked better as Pickins, aged 52, was clearly a lot younger than the Duke.

  • Hello Keith could you tell more about his business dealings with JW. I think he was a consistantly solid Actor.

Greetings from North of the 49th

  • I always felt that Wayne's Wil Anderson was supposed to be about the same age as Slim's character in The Cowboys. Wayne was 64 and Cabot would have been 67. I think that would have looked better as Pickins, aged 52, was clearly a lot younger than the Duke.

In any case, Duke's character was 60 years old, as stated by his wife in one scene.
