    Sometimes Credited As:
    Cliff 'Tex' Lyons

    Mini-Biography
    From All Movie Guide:
    A legendary stuntman/stunt coordinator,
Cliff Lyons was as handsome as any of the stars he doubled and had indeed starred in his own series of silent Westerns under the name of Tex Lyons.
Having begun his professional career performing with minor rodeos,
Lyonsdrifted to Hollywood in the early '20s, where he found work as a stuntman in such films as Ben-Hur (1925) and Beau Geste (1927).
In between these major releases, the newcomer did yeoman duty for Poverty Row entrepreneur Bud Barsky,
who produced eight Westerns in Sequoia National Park starring, alternately, Lyons and Al Hoxie.
Lyons would do a second series of eight equally low-budget jobs for producer Morris R. Schlank, filmed at Kernville, CA,
    and released 1928-1930
. This time, he would alternate with another cowboy star, Cheyenne Bill. Commented Lyons: "We would go on location and make two pictures at a time --
one of Cheyenne Bill's and one of mine -- and also play the villain in each other's."
Sound put an end to Lyons' starring career and he spent the next four decades or so as a riding double for the likes of Johnny Mack Brown, Buck Jones,
Ken Maynard, and even Tom Mix (in the 1935 serial The Miracle Rider).
In his later years he became closely associated with good friends John Wayne and John Ford, for whom he also did some second-unit directing.
Although not as remembered today as Yakima Canutt, Lyons was a major force in the burgeoning stunt business and many of his innovations
are still used by modern practitioners of the craft. He was married from 1938 to 1955 to B-Western heroine Beth Marion,
with whom he had two sons. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

  • Cliff Lyons, although not as well known as Yakima Canutt,
was a great stuntsman, a second-unit director and actor.
Some of his stunt inovations are still in use today.

He was involved in at least 27 films with Duke,
    some credited and uncredited
as an stuntman, actor, or technical advisor, and in some films he had several funtions!
In 11 of those films, (which are highlighted) he was 2nd. Unit director, or Assistant director.;-

Cliff Lyons, was obviously an integral part of Duke's inner circle,
firstly doubling and stunting for him, playing bit parts,
and finally finishing up as second unit director, to John Ford, and then Duke.

Cliff of course, in the movie 3 Godfathers , dressed up as Harry Carey Snr.,
mounted Harry's horse Sunny, rode up the crest of a hill,
stopped, and looked into the sunset, in a typical Carey pose.

Although this was the final scene to be shot, John Ford starts the film,
    with this fitting tribute,

'To the Memory of Harry Carey,
Bright Star, of the Early Western Sky'

The benefit of these biogs, of the lesser names,
make one realise, how important they were, and Cliff Lyons, is no exception.
An unsung hero, in the truest word.

    Mrs. C :angel1:

  • If you have watched 'The Searchers', he is the cavalry officer who asks Ward Bond about his injury during the raid at the end of the film.

In 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon', he helps stop the runaway coach at the beginning of the film.

    Hi Nathan,
    Thank you. It helps.
    Vera

  • HA! Rival superstar, Mao Tse Tung. That's a hot one. He may have been the leader of Red China but, everything I've read about him was that he was a disgusting pig who never bathed and had an ongoing supply of women to keep him happy. Duke could've whipped him to a frazzle.

Edited once, last by WaynamoJim: added content ().

  • LOL as he told Jeffrey Hunter he could do to him in The Searchers....nice use of a quote there Wanamo Jim!

  • To re-introduce one of Duke's leading stuntmen.
I am sure not many realise he made 27 films with Duke!!!

He was second unit director in quite a few, wasn't he, Keith? I have been told that he was kind of like the Pappy of stuntmen. Don't know enough about him yet. Still saving money for all the books. Dobe's in on sale for a pittance right now on Amazon, but can't swing it......hope it doesn't go up before I get some new orders in! KP keith

God, she reminds me of me! DUKE

  • Nathan, you are oh so close to the first major milestone....have to keep my eye on you!

God, she reminds me of me! DUKE

  • Hi Keith,
Have you a closer photo of Clyff Lyons? I can't identify him in the movies.
    Regards,
    Vera

Senta, don't seem to be to many closeups of Cliff available. The one Keith posted below with him and Duke and others is a good one for his later years though. If he has a speaking part, you will learn to tell him from his rather high voice. Here is an older shot of him in action. THE OTHER KEITH, LOL Also, if you have Wagon Master available to watch, he is the sheriff at the beginning who rides the bucking horse. You can get a really good idea of his looks and speaking voice there and in the card game a little bit later in the movie.

God, she reminds me of me! DUKE

LOL didn't even notice that. Thought it was all a new one. But, that was a nice pic of Cliff leaning out to swoop up the lady!
Oh, please excuse the double post on the second Unit.....didn't see yours.
