    Smile 100th Birthday Celebration

    I have marked on my calendar, May 25-27, 2007, as the time to celebrate John Wayne's 100th birthday. My problem is where! Winterset has announced that there will be a celebration there, and Ermal Williamson has said there will be one at Duke's old Bar 26 Ranch in Arizona on the same dates. My car does not go fast enough to attend both which I would like to do. Eraml has had some grand get-togethers in the past and I expect the Bar 26 would be a great time. I've been to Winterset twice, but I would sure like to go back. Guess I will have to see if I can be cloned!

    Hi Bill,

    If I can arrange a trip I'd be going the the 26 Bar Ranch gathering. Although being at The Duke's birth place 100 years later would be interesting.

    Yeah, I am trying to figure out what/if I can go to any of the events. I am thinking the Winterset, IA would be the best one for me as I have been informed by the "BOSS" that I will be using my vacation this year on some specific trips as well as my regular fishing trip to Canada. I have no idea what I am going to be able to come up with. I will probably end up winging it, unfortunately.

    billkruspe,

    First of all, we would like to welcome you to the John Wayne Message Board, the new and improved version! This is one of the best places on the 'net that you'll find, dedicated to John Wayne!

    In response to your question, we have several threads devoted to discussion on how to celebrate John Wayne's 100th birthday. I've posted links below. The gathering in Monument Valley is planned to commemorate the year of the 100th anniversary of JW's birth, though in late September because of more favorable weather conditions. The celebration in Eagar/Springerville will take place on the actual weekend of Duke's birthday.

    Re: 100th Birthday Celebration

    It looks like it will be Winterset for me also. Have been there twice while in Iowa for the Knoxville Nationals several years ago. Haven't been able to find anything out for event schedules other than what is on the birthplace website. I think we will just have to give it a few more weeks. dwlac you said you have reservations in Winterset? What are there for lodgings there? I figured the closest were in Des Moines.

    Even if you can't find lodging close... Winterset is only 20 miles south of I-80, the main west/east Interstate and once you drive that 20 miles north it's only a few miles west of Des Moines... plenty of lodging less than 40 miles from Winterset. Also I-35 is 15 miles east of Winterset. Here's an image of the area... Des Moines is hugh and has plenty of lodging, I've stayed there many times. Probably a better place to stay with more food options.

    Re: 100th Birthday Celebration

    * New Museum Groundbreaking Ceremony (NEW)
    * Old-Fashioned Hometown Parade (NEW)
    * Michael Martin Murphey Horseback Spectacular Concerts
    * John Wayne Birthday Wild West Revue
    * Appearance by Harry Carey, Jr. (NEW)
    * Cowboy Symposiums

    This is great... they added the things above from what was on there before. Wife put in for the time off now I need to make reservations. That new museum is suppose to be sweet. Definitely worth a trip back when it's completed. Even the big guy from his movie Big Jake is going to be there. Gonna be a blast!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Update: Got my reservations for Winterset... they are already booked in WInterset so I got reservations at the Marriott Resort about 26 miles from Winterset. It's a nice place, west side of Des Moines. Not much traffic to deal with. If necessary, I can dodge the traffic and head south from the hotel and take the county roads to get to Winterset. If anyone flies into Des Moines and needs a ride into WInterset we'll have a seat or two available. Hope to see a bunch of you in Iowa on May 25th.
