  • Out of curiousity did the Hollywood & the Star series 1963/64 narrated by Joseph Cotten ever get released on video or DVD in the US.

I had a number of the series on film and know John Wayne featured in Hollywood goes to War and the 1964 Oscar Special.

There was also a Oscar 50th anniversary prorgamme hosted by Jack Lemon that featured John Wayne.

  • Hi Mike,

It would appear, you refer to Going Hollywood:- The War Years.(1987)
I nearly posted this one Duke's Documentaries,
but thought I'd wait, see if anyone mentioned it,
now that you have,I'll post it,

    Thanks again

    Best Wishes

  • It seems that Duke Pilgrim is referring to a television series from the 1963-64 season. We've looked several places, and it definitely does not seem to be available for sale anywhere.

Here is what one user from IMDb had to say about the show -

It sounds like an interesting show. Duke Pilgrim, do you remember if any of John Wayne's films were part of this documentary series?

  • Hi Guys

I guess you came up with the same search results as I did.

I am not certain if there was a particular John Wayne 1/2 hour episode.

If there had been I am certain it would have turned up by now

Episodes I am aware of is Marilyn Monroe, Bogart, Jolson Monster Weve Known & loved which covered silent horror, Karloff & Lugosi era right up to Vince Price American International plus B movie science fiction movies not bad for half a hour.

There was also a two episode special on the Oscars from start to 1964 and Tom Jones winning best movie. Duke feature there receiving awards for John Ford.

Hollywood goes to War also features clips from John Wayne movies.

There was also The Swashbucklers which was mainly Errol Flynn but covered from Douglas Fairbanks to the 1940's

There was also Hollywood the Lovers which was every Male star.

Details on the internet seem patchy at best as it is quite a old TV series
and was made in Black & White but I can always hope.

  • Good work Keith

I have googled and yahooed etc till my fingers were sore.

It would be nice to think that they have made it to VHS or DVD somewhere proberably on public domain.

The fact that they made it to 8mm and 16mm gives me hope.

My favourites were Monroe and Monsters in content.
