  • FRANCIS FORD
    Information from IMDb

    Date of Birth
    August 15, 1882 - Portland, ME

    Date of Death
    September 9, 1953

    Mini-Biography
Mainly remembered for offering younger brother John Ford
his first opportunities in the movie business, Francis Ford (born Feeney)
was a touring company actor before entering films with Thomas Edison in 1907.
In the early 1910s, he served a tumultuous apprenticeship as a director/star
for producer Thomas Ince -- who in typical Ince fashion presented many
of Ford's accomplishments as his own -- before moving over to Carl Laemmle's
Universal in 1913. A true auteur, Ford would direct, write, and star in his own
Westerns and serials, often opposite Grace Cunard, the studio's top action heroine.
Contrary to popular belief they never married, but their onscreen partnership resulted
in such popular action serials as Lucille Love -- Girl of Mystery (1914),
The Broken Coin (1915), and The Adventures of Peg o' the Ring (1916).
Both Ford's and Cunard's careers declined in the 1920s,
with Ford directing mostly poverty row productions.
He kept working in films as a supporting actor through the early '50s,
mainly due to the influence of John, who often made Francis Ford
and Victor McLaglen supply the corny Irish humor for which he
exhibited a lifelong fondness. Francis Ford's son, Philip Ford,
also became a director of Westerns, and also like his father,
mainly of the poverty row variety.

  • Francis Ford, was a prolific film actor, writer, and director.
He was the older brother of film director John Ford.
He also appeared in many of John Fords movies including Young Mr. Lincoln.

He starred in the 1912 two-reeler The Deserter by Thomas H. Ince
and acted in over 400 films. He made his directoral debut alongside
fellow Hollywood director Thomas H. Ince the same year with
the Western dramatic short The Post Telegrapher,
starring Ann Little and popular child actress Mildred Harris.

His most memorable role was probably the old man in The Ox-Bow Incident (1943).

He appeared with Duke in 7 movies,
including one, that may have involved Duke

  • Hi Kieth

Try this one. I think you can see a slight likeness to his brother.

Rumour had it that the two brothers over a period were jealous of each other John because of Francis early fame and Francis because of John's later success. Some say that in his later years John would offer him small parts in order to humiliate him.

Personally I would just accept the two as they were and leave any conjecture to the shrinks.

  • Its always interesting to see if you can spot Francis in Ford movies.

One wonders if fate had been different for him could he have been as successful a director in the sound era as John Ford.

  • I'm glad I did this 'Pals'
as I for one, knew he was in The Quiet Man
    and 'Monterey'
but didn't realise he was in the others.
Something to look for, next time around!
