Hi everybody. I'm new here and relatively new to JW. I can't even say that I've been lurking, because I haven't been. Please forgive my newbie ignorance. But I recently watched They Were Expendable and am really curious to know the name of the song that plays whenever Duke is with Donna Reed (you know, the one they dance to on the porch). It's beautiful and I just gotta know what it is and/or who wrote it.

    Thanks!

    Jen,

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome! Always glad to have another John Wayne enthusiast join us, and it's real nice to have more women among the ranks as well. What part of the country (or world) do you call home?

As to your question, as of now, I don't know the answer, but there's a real good chance someone around here knows. In the meantime, I'll keep searching (h-m-m-m-m, guess I'll have to watch a John Wayne movie in the 'research' process :) - that'll be hard, as it is my favorite JW movie). I think this might be the perfect grand-daughter/grandma bonding experience - watch They Were Expendable with her, maybe she'll know the music!

Don't apologize for "newbie ignorance" - we were all newbies at one time. I can't tell you how much I've learned about John Wayne in the past 6 months - an incredible amount. It's the most fun learning I think I have ever done. And some of the things I have learned here have enhanced the enjoyment of other movies I own.

Welcome again, and don't be a stranger! I look forward to your questions and your insights.

Hiya Chester! Well do I ever feel welcome! Thanks so much for that. To answer your question, I am in Minnesota but in some ways I feel more at home in the Deep South. That's where my grandma is, so I won't be watching TWE with her anytime soon. :( I'll see her at Thanksgiving, though - me, Grandma B. & Duke - hmm... sounds like a nice way to pass some time.

So about how many women frequent this place? Just curious.

Well, I found the names of TWE's composers at IMDb - Earl K. Brent, Herbert Stothart, & Eric Zeisl... I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to music from the first half of the 20th century but this is a tune I'm not familiar with. It could be an original composition or one they borrowed from someone else. I certainly appreciate your help (or anyone else's for that matter).

I really enjoyed TWE - very somber & quietly moving. I feel like I barely scratched the surface of it, though; I think it's one that needs to be seen many times in order to truly appreciate it.

Thanks again and as to whether or not I'll be a stranger... I think I've already tied my horse to the hitching post.

    Jen,

Glad you're horse is tied to the hitching post!

We will be seeing my mom this weekend, to celebrate her 80th birthday. She's not necessarily a JW fan, but I'm taking along TWE to watch with her, and I suspect she might recognize the song (I'm hoping she will!). We'll let you know when we get back.

Let's see, how many female members . . . my wife hangs out with me, there's smokey, Monique, Little Duke (who's been away for awhile, but is back), Sands_of-Iwo-Jima, AEC23, stacy, LibertyV . . . those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. The great thing about this board is, that what one of us doesn't know (or can't remember), invariably somebody else will.

Have you checked out the Magnificent Seven thread yet? You might be interested in getting involved with that project. Check it out!

    Well, gotta mosey now . . .

Thanks for enlisting Ma Chester. And congratulations to her on reaching 80. My granny's only a few years behind that; I hope she makes it to at least 100.

Seven females? We aren't as rare of a breed as I thought. I'll bet our reasons for liking Duke don't always jive with yours, though... ;)

I read through the Magnificent Seven thread. I'm a little confused, though - any women who want to be involved are going to be depicted as angels?

    Sorry for the confusion, Jen.

The women as angels was one idea, but CHANCE said he couldn't fit that much onto the size canvas he has to work with. So he decided to do 2 Magnificent Seven pictures, one with guys from the board with the Duke, and one with the gals.

If you look straight south you will see me, via Alabama; well south and a little east.

Thanks again to everybody for the extremely warm welcomes! Everybody seems so friendly here. Truth be told, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at this point; I don't know all o' y'all yet and there are so many posts to read and so many movies to see...

    But I'll have fun learning!

Welcome to the board, A Girl Named Jen!

Glad to have you here. It's always great to see a fresh new face. I tried to find out the name of your song on TWE, but no luck yet. I do however have the song they guys sang (The Monkeys Have no Tails)at Doc's retirement party for downloading. I'm looking for a host site so I can put it there for all members to have.

Anyway, I look forward to your post here!

    Jen,

    Well, the good news/bad news . . .

I had my mom and some of her friends watch TWE over the weekend, and the good news is they could all sing along with the song, the bad news is nobody knew the title. The key phrase in the chorus is "What will I do?" but two out of three of them said that was NOT the title of the song.

Maybe the tune will drive them nuts until they wake up in the middle of the night and shout out the title of the song, and call me the next morning! We can only hope.

    Jen,

I don't know if you saw this thread (Music, music in twe) in Off Topic, but it looks like Chester saw it and responded sometime when I wasn't around :o . It seems smokey might have found the answer to your very first question on the board. I stumbled upon it while looking for something else, but knew you would be interested.

    Mrs. Chester

    P.S. Thanks, smokey!!

Thanks! You guys are so good to me!

Smokey had mentioned this to me in a PM a few weeks ago. It was funny; I looked the title and songwriters up on Google and do you know something? The only hit I received was one that led me right back to Smokey's message here at this forum.

    Heh.

Anyway, maybe I'll find it someday. I still think it's a very pretty song for a very touching moment in the film.
