    Re: Speakeasy (1929)

Speakeasy (1929) was an early talking sports drama film directed by Benjamin Stoloff
and adapted by Frederick Hazlitt Brennan and Edwin J. Burke.
The picture was produced and distributed by Fox Film Corporation.
Lola Lane and Paul Page played the lead roles.
John Wayne, age 22, had a minor role in the film.

All film elements to this movie are considered lost.
But Vitaphone-style discs of the soundtrack survive

This early movie which uses intercuts from
Movietone news, is another movie where
Duke is mentioned as being involved.

The is a reference in a 64 page,
John Wayne Biography published in 1979
    said this
    The Fox Publicity Department,
then went to work on him (Duke)
In an obscure biography dated July 8 1930,
    'John Wayne's... total picture experience
(was) as a grip, and later as a prop boy at the
Fox Studio, on such productions as
    Mother Macree, Four Sons and
    Speakeasy
This is the ony known source of information of
Duke being involved with this movie.

True or not, we will know in time,
but for now, still part of Duke's Filmography

The 22 Year Old John Wayne
    23 September 2003 | by The-Lonely-Londoner (London, England)

There was definitely something to be said about the young John Wayne.
Whatever you may think about 19th century American history,
he embodies the recreation (and reinvention) of the American west on screen.
No matter how far removed the myth is from reality,
he made entertaining viewing in almost all of his films.
