Got my list in a week ago, but just discovered this discussion thread. My top two Duke films (this year, anyway) are at opposite ends of his career, Stagecoach and The Shootist. I think it's a testament to the man that his performance in 1939 could thrill me the way it did, and almost 40 years later he could do the same. Who can ever forget the introduction of the Ringo Kid, spinning his rifle as the camera comes in? Chills!
After those two, I went with Big Jake and The Quiet Man. I could watch Big Jake every week, the climax is suspenseful and Richard Boone's character might be my favorite of all Wayne's antagonists. The presence of Maureen O'Hara in both films certainly adds to their rewatchability for me.
Moving on from there, the main theme I see in my list is how it showcases the whole spectrum of Wayne's career, in time and also in the many different genres and styles of films he made. Well, maybe not the whole career. I don't have any of the Poverty Row-era films on there. I do enjoy some of them, probably Somewhere in Sonora the most, but it's hard for me to measure them against his main body of work, if you will.
I glanced through some other people's lists and some films that might be higher on my list than for other fans include The Sons of Katie Elder, The Green Berets, The High and the Mighty and Hatari!. I don't know that I think Hatari is a great films, but I find the scenes with the animal captures just riveting and thrilling, watching them speed across the African savanna.
My top 25 is dependent largely on my mood at the time I'm making it out! I really have NEVER watched a JW movie that I regretted watching, although, like anyone else, there are some I'll watch again and again, while others...not so much.
