    Reception
The same year that Stoney Burke premiered, NBC aired its own drama about rodeo performers, The Wide Country.
    It ended after twenty-eight episodes.
Both series were essentially Westerns that debuted right at the end of the time when Western shows
    - a fixture of 1950's and early 1960s television - had been a #1 draw on the medium.
By the early 1960s, television Westerns had fallen out of favor with audiences.
Both shows were canceled after one season.

An Unusual Modern-Day Cow-Boy: Stoney Burke
28 February 2002 | by Thomas Rucki ([email protected]) (Paris, France)

"Stoney Burke" is a contemporary and realistic short-lived western series (one season and 32 episodes) whose leading character (played by Jack Lord) walks in the path of David Miller's downbeat film: "Lonely Are The Brave". During the same period (1962-1963), Revue studios launch a rival show: "The Wide Country". The quality of "Stoney Burke" lies in the production values, thanks to writer-director Leslie Stevens and his Daystar productions. Most of the cast and crew come back the next season in the sci-fi anthology, "The Outer Limits". Composer Dominic Frontiere's soundtrack is recycled all along the 1960's series ("The Rat Patrol", "The Fugitive"). Above all, this is the first official assignment by academy winner cinematographer Conrad Hall. This cow-boy drama is shot like a harsh Film Noir and deals with the daily miseries of maverick Rodeo contestants! From the pilot, "The Contender", we learn all about the characters, especially Ves Painter (Warren Oates). Stay with us, Stoney!

  • In the next 2 or 3 months, this brief TV series from the early Sixties will become available in DVD form.

Probably not many of our members are old enough to remember the series but back then, it was one of my favorite TV shows.

  • This is a great series. Saw every episode and this was when you had to watch it when it was actually being aired.
The episodes with Oates and Dern are particularly memorable.

    We deal in lead, friend.

  • Ben Johnson had a guest role as a rodeo official in the fourth episode, "Point of Honor." I did screencaps from that episode a while ago but as you can see below, the, er, unofficial DVD I was working from looks pretty awful. I look forward to redoing screencaps from the official DVD.
