Rio Bravo works in my opinion due to its rich characters and Stumpy may be the best character performance barring the Dukes in any John Wayne movie.
Dean Martin was terrific as the alcoholic battling his personal demons and great actor and performer.
A special mention as well to carlos whom is well performed by the actor playing the part but yes Stumpy is my favourite character.

Hi
Walter Brennen was one of Howard Hawks' favourite actors and I should imaginre that if the part hadn't already existed Hawks would have written it especially for him.
On the other hand Dean Martin also seemed perfectly natural in the role of Dude but it is a fact that Hawks had written a short list of nineteen actors to play the role and Martin's name was not among them. The original list consisted of such people as Frank Sinatra, James Cagney John Cassavetes, Richard Widmark, Edmund O'Brien Rod Steiger, and in view of the animosity felt in Red River, John Ireland.
An looking at those names it would be hard to imagine any of them playing the role.
When Martin's agent attempted to get Hawks to consider Dean Martin for the part of Dude Hawks agreed on condition that Martin present himself in his office the next morning. It should be remembered that Martin had broken up with Jerry Lewis and many considered that his career had reached its end.
At the time Martin was working in Los Angeles and to get to Hawks office in time he had to get up very early after a very late night, hire a plane and car for the meeting. When he arrived in Hawks office he was extremely dishevelled, and Hawks reasoned that if he was prepared to take that much trouble to get there he would give his best for Hawks.
The part of Dude plus the G.I. in The young lions proved to be a turning point in Martin's career.

Walk Tall - Talk Low
Hi Arthur,
Thanks for the info, regarding Dino,
I think he was great in the part, and as Duke would have said
he made a fair stab, at his first major role.
I think he was perfect in the role, as I thought Ricky Nelson, was not,
but he and of course another newcomer Angie Dickinson,
Walter, and Ward, and don't forget ,'THE LAWMAN' ,
John Russell, all added to a great film.
Best Wishes
Keith
Totnes- the Tombstone of England
I thought Dean was a good western actor. Not only did he do more than a passable job in "Rio Bravo" but I liked him in "Bandolero" also.

Jimmy, Dino, and Raquel, and don't forget
